Planned Giving: Hilarie Jane Forst Gade Legacy Society
A New Way to Give, in Honor of a Beloved Friend
Hilarie Jane Forst Gade loved Lake Champlain, and Lake Champlain Maritime Museum. Her first gift to the Museum was in our first year, 1985, and she continued as an ardent supporter her whole life. She spent a lot of time on the lake where she had a summer camp and loved the serenity the lake gave her. She wanted that experience to be available to everyone.
Her bequest to the Museum in 2025 was an extraordinary affirmation of that wish. Hilarie helped pave the way for the Museum to sustain its free access to programs and free admission for years to come.
Hilarie was a beloved member of the local Vermont community where she lived. She gave back to her community in countless ways, and in turn, was nourished by it.
Hilarie’s gift is an example of how estate planning can lead to a contribution that is often larger than what is possible during your lifetime. To honor Hilarie’s generosity we have established our legacy society in her name.

How to Support with Planned Giving
There are many ways to make a Planned Gift to Lake Champlain Maritime Museum. Some you can change over time as your circumstances change, and some are more permanent; some offer tax advantages to the donor or to other beneficiaries of the estate; some require legal assistance, while some are as simple as changing a beneficiary to an account online. In all cases, we recommend that you consult with your financial advisor or attorney and consider sharing information on your choices with family or other people important in your life.

Lake Champlain Maritime Museum could be your beneficiary in:
Your Will. This can be arranged when you write or revise your will, or you can add a codicil at any time. You can bequeath a specific amount, a percentage, or a gift from the residual after other beneficiary gifts are made, and you can give real property. Your will should clearly state the legal name, EIN number, and address of our organization:
- Lake Champlain Maritime Museum at Basin Harbor Incorporated, 4472 Basin Harbor Road, Vergennes, VT 05491, EIN: 22-2570380
- Sample sentence to include in your will: “I give to Lake Champlain Maritime Museum at Basin Harbor Incorporated, a nonprofit corporation currently located at 4472 Basin Harbor Road, Vergennes, VT 05491, or its successor thereto, __ [written amount, percentage, or residual of the estate or description of property] for its unrestricted use and purpose.”
You can also make the Museum the beneficiary of some or all of your assets in these ways:
Your IRA or other retirement accounts. While individuals who are beneficiaries of these accounts must pay income tax, nonprofits do not, so this might be a wise approach for you. You can often make these beneficiary changes directly online.
Your life insurance policy: If the policy is paid up or has cash value, you can donate the policy itself, or make the Museum a beneficiary.
Your Annuity or Advised Fund: The Museum can be a beneficiary of your Charitable Gift Annuity, Charitable Remainder Trust (CRT or CRUT), or your Donor Advised Fund.
You can also donate real property such as land, art, jewelry or other items. Please talk with the Museum about this if you are considering a gift of land, so we can determine if we could accept it. Such a gift can be included in your will or a codicil.
It is also possible to donate your home or second home, which could be arranged as a “life estate” meaning you could live in the house after donating it during your lifetime. This requires a conversation and contractual arrangements with the Museum.
Each of these generous gifts would be a remarkable and appreciated way for you to assure the long-term sustainability of Lake Champlain Maritime Museum. We are grateful for your consideration of a planned gift and would be happy to discuss this with you if you like. While it is not required, if you choose to let us know about your plans, we would like to include you in our Hilarie Jane Forst Gade Legacy Society.
