Deep Dives: The Great Bridge and the American Revolution

September 23 , 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm
History lies in the depths of Lake Champlain, waiting to share its secrets and stories. In 2026, we’re opening up our vaults and taking a DEEP DIVE into the past with Museum experts, archaeologists, historians, and educators in our free evening conversation series!
Join us every other Wednesday from June through October for a free “Deep Dives” talk. Each evening will include an expert presentation and time for questions and conversation at the end.
On September 23rd, we will be joined by Director of Archaeology Paul Willard Gates who will discuss the Great Bridge.
The Great Bridge at Fort Ticonderoga and Mount Independence was part of a larger defensive works project constructed by American forces during the Revolutionary War in 1776 and 1777. The presentation will review the historical background of the Great Bridge and its importance to the defense of Lake Champlain during the American Revolution. Additionally, information from the archaeological research and survey between 1992 and 1993 will be discussed as a reflection of McLaughlin’s work. The presentation will conclude with the Museum’s recent involvement with submerged cultural resource mitigation of a section of the archaeological remains in New York State waters. Please join us for this discussion as we continue to dive deep into the
