Sinking of Sarah Ellen
Event
In the winter of 1860 Sarah Ellen was transporting stone with a small crew of Captain Henry Clay Hayward, his wife Lucy Whitney Hayward, and Joseph LaPlante when a storm arose and the ship foundered. Sarah Ellen was accompanied by another ship, Daniel Webster, captained by Solomon W. Clark. When Sarah Ellen began to sink, attempts were made to rescue the crew, however only Joseph LaPlante was rescued in time.
