DESCRIPTION:We’re excited to welcome homeschool families to Lake Champlain Maritime Museum for our Fall Homeschool Day! This day will focus on the ecology of Lake Champlain and will include activities such as a scavenger hunt by the waterfront\, fishing as a group with a large net then identifying what we caught\, looking at plankton and benthic macroinvertebrates under a microscope\, and a lesson on threats to Lake Champlain.  \n\n\n\nAll members of the family are welcome\, but activities are geared toward ages 6 and up. We will provide coloring pages for younger siblings if they need a break from structured activities. Please note that all children must be accompanied by an adult. \n\n\n\nLimited space available! Join us on October 18 for the first ever Split Rock Dinghy Regatta\, a relaxed sailing event with just a little bit of competition on Lake Champlain. We’ll have several race-style events\, food\, and fun for all. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free family-friendly day of public art-making with Juniper Creative Arts and be a part of a new mural that will be going up at the Museum in 2026!  \n\n\n\nThis free drop-in event is open to all ages and artistic abilities\, rain or shine! We’ll roll-up our sleeves\, reflect on the past\, and get hands-on as we contribute to a public art project for the Museum’s new exhibit exploring the American Revolution on Lake Champlain. The final mural will be unveiled with the new exhibit in May 2026. \n\n\n\nJuniper Creative Arts is a family collective whose mural initiatives focus on creative placemaking to foster community-building\, sense of belonging\, and the celebration of African diasporic culture within themes of Afro-Futurism\, mythical fantasy\, surrealism\, and nature. To date\, they have created close to 40 community murals located in schools and on public buildings across the state of Vermont. \n\n\n\nThis event will take place in the center of the Museum campus under the Philadelphia II shed. Chairs and art supplies will be provided. No prior registration required. Open Dinghy Sailing offers weekly open hours and dinghy rentals for anyone with prior sailing experience to take one of the Museum’s custom Split-Rock Dinghies out for a turn on the lake. Boats are available to book in 90-minute increments and must be made by the boat and day. We’ll go over fishing regulations and send you off to spend time down at our waterfront fishing\, with assistance available as needed. SUMMARY:Lake Champlain Challenge Race 2025
DESCRIPTION:The Lake Champlain Challenge Race is an annual fun-filled summer race on Lake Champlain! Open to all human-powered vessels\, race to complete a three-mile course and set the fastest time for their respective category. Race categories include: Coxed rowing gigs (six and four oared)\, fixed and sliding seat single and double rowboats\, kayaks\, canoes\, paddleboards and misc. The only requirement is your boat must be propelled by human power\, nothing else! Awards will be given for fastest in each category and most creative race name. \n\n\n\nAfter the race\, all are invited to a free lunch buffet\, hosted by the Museum’s rowing clubs.  \n\n\n\nThe Challenge Race is $30/person and payment will be collected in person at check-in on race day. DESCRIPTION:Did you know there are hundreds of historic shipwrecks in Lake Champlain? Join us for a special tour and dive into this exciting underwater history\, without getting wet! This scenic boat tour will take you to the sites of some famous local shipwrecks as Museum experts recount their dramatic stories. Watch underwater footage of shipwrecks from the Museum’s archaeology team and underwater Remote Operated Vehicles (ROVs)\, learn about our lake’s unique geology and history\, talk with Museum experts\, and get a first-hand look at the nature and animals that call these parts of the lake home including eagles\, fish\, and more. An incredible experience for all ages! \n\n\n\nOn the day of your tour\, gather on the Museum green at 10:00 am and proceed to the dock at Basin Harbor as a group at 10:10 to begin the tour\, which will run from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm. The walk to Basin Harbor is approximately a half-mile on pavement\, and visitors are welcome to drive if needed. Watch underwater footage of shipwrecks from the Museum’s archaeology team and underwater Remote Operated Vehicles (ROVs)\, learn about our lake’s unique geology and history\, talk with Museum experts\, and get a first-hand look at the nature and animals that call these parts of the lake home including eagles\, fish\, and more. An incredible experience for all ages! \n\n\n\nOn the day of your tour\, gather on the Museum green at 10:00 am and proceed to the dock at Basin Harbor as a group at 10:10 to begin the tour\, which will run from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm. The walk to Basin Harbor is approximately a half-mile on pavement\, and visitors are welcome to drive if needed. SUMMARY:Open Dinghy Sailing
DESCRIPTION:Get out on the water\, enjoy Lake Champlain\, and keep your sailing skills fresh! Open Dinghy Sailing offers weekly open hours and dinghy rentals for anyone with prior sailing experience to take one of the Museum’s custom Split-Rock Dinghies out for a turn on the lake. Friends\, family\, dates\, solo sailors – all are welcome to join us and sail away the afternoon or kick back after work! \n\n\n\nOpen Dinghy Sailing hours are available on Wednesday and Friday afternoons from 4–7 pm. Boats are available to book in 90-minute increments and must be made by the boat and day. Open Dinghy Sailing is pay-what-you-can with a suggested rate of $40 per 90-minute booking. \n\n\n\nThe Museum’s Split-Rock Dinghies can fit a maximum of two adults\, or one adult and one child (under 13) each. Participants should have previous on-water experience in a sailboat or other small watercraft and be able to swim. Come prepared to sail\, wear attire that is okay to get wet.
