James Wakefield Rescue Row
October 2 ,8:00 am - 1:00 pm
One of our two annual open-water rowing races for our Lake Champlain Maritime Museum Youth Rowing League school teams. This race is held in honor of and named after James Wakefield, the brave first responder to the shipwreck of the General Butler canal boat in 1876. James and his son rowed out to the Burlington breakwater in the middle of a storm to rescue the passengers and crew stranded when their boat crashed onto the breakwater.
This race is open to the public to watch and cheer on our rowing teams from Burlington Bay and around Perkins Pier. Participating school teams include Burlington High School, Champlain Valley Union High School, Mt. Abraham High School, Mt. Abraham Middle School, Rice Memorial High School, South Burlington High School, Vergennes High School, and Vergennes Middle School.
