Expedition Champlain

We will be running a modified Expedition Champlain program this year. Instead of using pilot gigs, where participants must sit about 3′ apart, we will be using kayaks for this expedition to ensure that all participants can maintain the recommended 6′ social distance.

We have implemented new safety protocols for all expeditions this summer in an effort to keep everyone safe and healthy while participating in these overnight programs. Read our COVID-19 Safety Protocols >

About Expedition Champlain

Expedition Champlain is an eight-day overnight teen expedition that combines traditional rowing, exploration, and wilderness skills all into an 8-day adventure. You will join fellow rowers to power a 32’ pilot gig (a pilot gig is traditional wooden rowing boat built for open-water rowing) that was made by our own boat building students and is part of our youth racing fleet.

This expedition departs from the Museum in two crews of six and sets off on a course selected by you, your crew members, and our trip leaders on Lake Champlain. Over the course of the eight-day journey we will row each day and stop along the way to explore, learn about the lake, and cook and camp each evening.

On this expedition, we “pull hard” and work together to explore the lake, become skilled rowers, learn wilderness skills, and become a true team of friends.

Participants should be prepared to pitch in and work with their fellow expedition-mates to set up camp, cook, clean up, break down camp, and support each other along the way.

We practice low-impact camping and there is little to no running water or bathrooms along the way.
