SUMMARY:Lake History Cruise
DESCRIPTION:Join staff from Lake Champlain Maritime Museum\, in partnership with Whistling Man Schooner Company\, for an expert-led tour on the fascinating history of Lake Champlain out of Burlington. From hundreds of shipwrecks to historic naval battles\, prohibition smugglers to modern day nautical archaeology discoveries\, the lake has a rich and unique history. We will launch from the Burlington Waterfront to explore the lake on the Friend Ship\, a traditionally-rigged\, 31’ Friendship sloop. Don’t miss this unforgettable experience on Lake Champlain. \n\n\n\nIn every tour\, part of the ticket sales go directly to the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum to support their mission of connecting all people to Lake Champlain.  \n\n\n\nWhile sailing near the sites of iconic shipwrecks of Burlington Bay\, captain and crew will share stories of famous shipwrecks\, history of the various eras of human activity on Lake Champlain\, and current archaeology happening on the bottom of the lake. Key sites of interest will include the wreck sites of the General Butler\, the OJ Walker\, and the Burlington “Horse Ferry” wrecks\, and much more. Come prepared to share your interests and knowledge with the group! Visitors are also welcome to bring their own food and beverage along for the ride. \n\n\n\nSince this tour departs from the Burlington Waterfront\, we recommend that visitors allot additional time to find parking downtown. Transportation from the Museum to the Burlington Waterfront is not included. Additional information on parking and location can be found from Whistling Man here (link to Where We’re Located — Whistling Man Schooner Co.) \n\n\n\n\nBook Now

SUMMARY:Boat Launch Day 2026
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate the launch of our newest boat built by students in Lake Champlain! \n\n\n\nOver the course of this school year\, a group of students from Middlebury Union High School and the Long Trail Program have been participating in our alternative education boat building program. These boat building students have been coming to the Museum’s boat shop weekly to learn\, work with their hands\, and come together to build a 25’ wooden rowing gig that will join the Museum’s fleet for education\, school rowing teams\, expeditions\, and the public. It’s been an incredible journey for all of them\, including a trip to the forest to learn how to select a tree that will be used to build a boat and literally building the boat from tree to finished vessel with guidance from expert boat builders. \n\n\n\nOn May 22\, all parents\, teachers\, staff\, friends\, and members of the public are invited to join us at the Museum for a special launch day celebration. Students will present their finished boat\, share a little bit about their experience building\, and then we’ll parade them down to the harbor where they will launch the boat for the very first time in the lake. \n\n\n\nThis event is free to join\, no registration required. Light refreshments will be provided.

SUMMARY:Spring Wave Race 2026
DESCRIPTION:The spring open-water rowing season for all middle and high school rowing teams ends with this seasonal championship race at Lake Champlain Maritime Museum! Over 100 youth rowers from around Vermont and New England will participate in races. All are welcome to join us and cheer on these rowers from the Museum’s harbor. \n\n\n\nEach season after the Spring Wave\, Nick Patch\, the Museum’s Director of Maritime programs\, presents the Bradley Cunningham Award to a graduating senior rower nominated by coaches. The award is named in honor of Brad Cunningham\, who was a participant and then junior leader in our Champlain Discovery summer kayak program for five years. He rowed and raced in our first pilot gig Spirit of Otter Creek\, launched in 1999. Brad was passionate about on-water programs\, knew how to lead by example\, and was a bright light of positivity for all who knew him. He tragically died in a ski accident in January 2001. We offer this award annually to a graduating senior rower who stood out as a positive role model and leader for our youth rowing community. \n\n\n\nYouth rowers must register to participate in this race through their rowing team or as part of their rowing season registration. Please check with your rowing coach if you are not sure whether you are registered. The public is always welcome to attend races for free and cheer on participating crews!
