SUMMARY:Collections Corner: Textile Cleaning
DESCRIPTION:How do museums keep textiles in their collections clean? Join us on Saturday\, July 2 and learn the basics of textile cleaning. Our Collections Manager will explore the differences between wet and dry cleaning (spoiler: this is a little different than taking your suits to the cleaners) and then demonstrate the textile cleaning process. As part of the demonstration\, we will clean one of the topsails from the Aladdin\, a boat built in 1928 and used by campers from Camp Dingley Dell on the Champlain Islands until 1939.  \n\n\n\nAttendees are also invited to hop in on a tie-dye workshop as well to make your own tie-dyed tee inspired by the multi-colored sails of the Aladdin.

SUMMARY:Tie-Dye Workshop
DESCRIPTION:As part of our collection at the Museum\, we are the home of a topsail from the Aladdin\, a boat built in 1928 and used by the summer campers at Camp Dingley Dell on the Champlain Islands until 1939. Aladdin’s sails were unforgettably colorful and have their own unique tie-dye style design\, a peek of which you can see in the image featured here. We’ve been inspired by these sails and want to create our own multi-colored creations! \n\n\n\nJoin us on Saturday\, July 2 for a tie-dye workshop inspired by these multi-colored sails! Kids of all ages (and adults too!) can join us to get a close-up look at the real topsail and then tie-dye their own shirt inspired by the Aladdin. $5 per shirt\, pay in the Museum’s welcome center.  \n\n\n\nWant to know more about the topsail itself? Come earlier in the day for a textile cleaning demonstration to learn how we care for the sails and other textiles in our Collection.

SUMMARY:Boat Building & Composites: Skills Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Register Now\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDo you want to learn boat building skills from the masters? Join us in the boat shop this summer for a 5-week skills workshop led by two expert boat builders and learn the essential traditional wood and composite boat construction skills needed for a wide range of small boat projects. \n\n\n\nYou’ll gain valuable hands-on experience\, knowledge\, and confidence needed to tackle new or repair projects of your own. Over the course of 5 weeks you will also help our boat shop craft lightweight sailing dinghies to add to the Museum’s fleet for use by the public and education programs. We will be building the Split Rock Sailing Dinghy\, a lightweight composite sail boat designed by Jim Donovan. \n\n\n\nIn this workshop\, you will learn traditional wooden boat construction skills including wood joinery\, hand tool usage\, and plywood panels before learning modern composite techniques for boats. Composites we’ll learn about in this workshop include carbon fiber\, fiberglass\, epoxy resins\, and molds. As the finale to this workshop\, we will launch and test out the new fleet of small sail boats in the Museum’s harbor. \n\n\n\nInstructors\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJim Donovan is a veteran composite yacht designer and builder with over 30 years’ experience. Jim designed the sailing dinghies we will be building in this workshop. \n\n\n\nCharlie Beyer is a woodworker\, wooden boat builder\, and longtime instructor in the Museum’s boat shop. \n\n\n\nSchedule\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis workshop will run for five weeks from July 10–August 13 with required sessions every Sunday and optional weekday evening sessions. Weekday sessions will give you the chance to practice the techniques we will be using in Sunday sessions. On Saturday\, August 13\, we will launch and test out our new crafts. SUMMARY:Cyanobacteria Testing Demo
DESCRIPTION:Is cyanobacteria a threat to the lake or is it simply an aquatic organism? It actually can be both! \n\n\n\nCyanobacteria is a single-celled aquatic organism that is natural to Lake Champlain. However\, in areas where the water is extra warm or there are excess nutrients present\, cyanobacteria can grow and create harmful blooms. How do you know if your local water has a harmful amount of cyanobacteria? You can test it! \n\n\n\nHere at Lake Champlain Maritime Museum\, we monitor the water quality in our harbor weekly and report our water conditions and cyanobacteria levels to the Vermont Department of Health. Our weekly testing is open for anyone to watch and learn! Join us on Wednesdays at the waterfront for Cyanobacteria Testing as we demonstrate how to test water\, assess what is or is not cyanobacteria\, and (if present) evaluate how severe a bloom is.

SUMMARY:Cyanobacteria Testing Demo
DESCRIPTION:Is cyanobacteria a threat to the lake or is it simply an aquatic organism? It actually can be both! \n\n\n\nCyanobacteria is a single-celled aquatic organism that is natural to Lake Champlain. However\, in areas where the water is extra warm or there are excess nutrients present\, cyanobacteria can grow and create harmful blooms. How do you know if your local water has a harmful amount of cyanobacteria? You can test it! \n\n\n\nHere at Lake Champlain Maritime Museum\, we monitor the water quality in our harbor weekly and report our water conditions and cyanobacteria levels to the Vermont Department of Health. Our weekly testing is open for anyone to watch and learn! Join us on Wednesdays at the waterfront for Cyanobacteria Testing as we demonstrate how to test water\, assess what is or is not cyanobacteria\, and (if present) evaluate how severe a bloom is.

This art program includes a spotlight tour of the the *Nebizun: Water is Life exhibit with the curator and a hands-on art program.  Children must be accompanied by adults.
