SUMMARY:Spitfire Shipwreck Virtual Reality Experience 
DESCRIPTION:Want to know what it’s like to explore an underwater shipwreck?   \n\n\n\nDive into the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum’s virtual reality tour of Spitfire\, a 1776 gunboat that sank during the American retreat from Valcour Bay. Using thousands of photos\, sonar images\, and videos of the wreck\, we created a detailed\, 3-dimensional model which Champlain College students transformed into this virtual reality dive. Stop by Fragments: Voices of the American Revolution on Lake Champlain and experience it for yourself! \n\n\n\nAccessibility: From the flexi-pave path\, there is one wheelchair accessible entrance to Fragments on the north side of the building. The exhibit space is fully ADA compliant.

SUMMARY:Philadelphia II Open Hours
DESCRIPTION:Soldiers in the Revolutionary War not only fought on boats\, they also often lived on them for months. Step aboard the Museum’s replica of the Revolutionary War gunboat Philadelphia to explore their living and working conditions\, understand the mechanics of the vessel\, and even row the oars! Aboard the vessel\, staff will have real artifacts from Revolutionary War sites around the lake (including recent artifacts recovered by our archaeologists at Arnold’s Bay) for visitors to see\, touch\, and learn about! \n\n\n\nAccessibility: The Philadelphia II is currently on the Museum Green. There is a staircase leading up to the boat\, and the boat is in the middle of a grassy area. However\, the rigging and cannon from the Philadelphia II are nearby or on the surrounding lawn\, and our staff would be happy to talk about the vessel as well as display props on the lawn. Staff can also show artifacts on the lawn if needed.

SUMMARY:Whaleboat Wednesdays
DESCRIPTION:Try something new on Lake Champlain – go sailing in a custom 29’ whaleboat!   \n\n\n\nThis is a great and one-of-a-kind experience for a group of family\, friends\, or adventurous coworkers to get out on Lake Champlain in a traditionally-rigged wooden boat. Combining rowing and sailing\, these vessels were built in the Museum’s boat shop and are an unforgettable way to experience the lake.   \n\n\n\nWhaleboats are available to book in 1.5-hour increments for yourself or a pair at a flexible $60 pay-what-you-can rate per boat rental. Advanced registration is strongly recommended to reserve seats for everyone in your party.  \n\n\n\nEach whaleboat can accommodate groups of 5 people. You may book all five slots\, or the boat may include multiple parties. A museum skipper will accompany each departing whaleboat to instruct and steer. Come prepared to sail\, wear attire that is okay to get wet. Feel free to contact Sailing Programs Manager Matt Harrison at 952-303-1382 if you have any questions or if you need special accommodation.  \n\n\n\nIf no whaleboats depart on select Wednesdays\, open sailing aboard the Museum’s Split Rock Dinghies will be offered instead.   \n\n\n\nPlease note: We cannot offer an introduction to sailing at Open Dinghy Hours! Participants must have prior experience in a sailing vessel or small watercraft. DESCRIPTION:Looking for a fun and educational activity for your littlest sailor? Join us on Fridays at 11:00 for Lake Champlain Maritime Museum’s weekly storytime!   \n\n\n\nFamilies with young children (recommended age 5 and younger) are invited to gather with a Museum educator in our historic summer camp building\, the Roost\, as we read some of our favorite stories about Lake Champlain and summer adventures on the water out loud for all to enjoy. Stories will be read as a group and there will also be coloring pages and crafts available afterwards.   \n\n\n\nStorytime meets every Friday from May 29–October 16. This program is free to attend with no registration required.   \n\n\n\nThe Roost is situated off of a gravel path at the back of the Museum green. The ramp at the back of the building is accessible over grass. SUMMARY:Open Sailing Finale!
DESCRIPTION:Get out on the water on a museum sailboat and enjoy Lake Champlain one last time at our Fall 2026 open sailing finale! Throughout the day\, Sailing Programs Manager Matt Harrison will also be demonstrating our new natural linen spritsail aboard our Shad Boat Mac\, which was crafted this July through a partnership with the Weaver’s Croft\, the Sailcloth Study Group\, and Gambell & Hunter Sail Loft during a conference titled “By Hand: Reclaiming the Art of Historical Sail Making”. \n\n\n\nOpen Dinghy Sailing will be available from 11am to 4pm on our final day. Open Dinghy Sailing is pay-what-you-can with a suggested rate of $40 per 90-minute booking.  \n\n\n\nThe Museum’s Split-Rock Dinghies can fit a maximum of two adults\, or one adult and one child (under 13) each. If you are interested in renting out one of our larger Beetle Cat Boats or our replica Shad Boat Mac\, please feel free to reserve a time and then reach out to Matt Harrison (matth@lcmm.org; 952-303-1382).  \n\n\n\nParticipants should have previous on-water experience in a sailboat or other small watercraft and be able to swim. Come prepared to sail\, wear attire that is okay to get wet. DESCRIPTION:Summer has flown by! Let’s celebrate a wonderful 2026 Season at Lake Champlain Maritime Museum! Our final weekend open to the public is October 16–18 before we close the Museum exhibits and grounds for winter. To usher in the final weekend of the 2026 Season\, join us on Friday\, October 16 in the Hoehl Family Visitor Center for a free closing reception with light refreshments\, conversation\, and friends.  \n\n\n\nWe’ll have some opportunities to get out on the water with a final sail as well as a demonstration of our new natural linen spritsail\, crafted through a partnership this July with the Weaver’s Croft\, the Sailcloth Study Group\, and Gambell & Hunter Sail Loft during a conference titled “By Hand: Reclaiming the Art of Historical Sail Making”. It’s also a great chance to pick up any last-minute gifts from the Museum store and don’t forget the book list for the “Becoming America” book club!  \n\n\n\nThis event is free to attend\, no RSVP needed.  \n\n\n\nPS: Fear not! SUMMARY:Collections Corner: Recovering the Exploded Cannon 
DESCRIPTION:On October 11\, 1776\, one of the cannon aboard the gunboat New York exploded\, killing Patriot sailor Thomas Rogers and injuring his crewmates Jonas Holden and Daniel McCay. Understanding how and why this accident happened continues to be part of our Revolutionary War research today. Using a 3D printed reproduction of the cannon\, join museum educators as we explore what each piece can tell us about the moment of the explosion and how the aftermath of the accident affected Thomas\, Jonas\, and Daniel’s families.   \n\n\n\nThis program was generously funded through a grant from the Great Lakes Fisheries Commission and the Champlain Valley National Heritage Partnership.

SUMMARY:Fall Youth Blacksmithing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a day of metalworking just for teens ages 13–17! With workshop slots available on October 24 and November 15\, students can join us in the forge and learn about the history of metalworking and get hands-on experience with the primary techniques for forming\, forging\, and crafting metal objects as they make samples and finished pieces. Each participant will get to forge their own piece in our blacksmith forge and complete an additional project outside of the forge if time permits. \n\n\n\nNo prior metal working or blacksmithing experience is necessary\, just an excitement to create something new! We’re excited to share the wonder of metal arts with the next generation. \n\n\n\nOn the day of the workshop\, participants should wear closed-toe shoes\, long pants and a long-sleeve shirt made of natural fibers. Those without these things will not be permitted to work in the blacksmith forge. Participants should also bring their own lunch and water bottle. SUMMARY:Fall Blacksmithing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wanted to learn how to work with fire and shape metal? In this one-day class for adult beginners\, participants will learn how to start and manage a fire\, ensure safe blacksmithing practices\, and develop basic techniques for shaping metal including forming a hook\, twisting\, and drifting. At the end of the class\, you will take home a hook or bracelet that you’ve made with your new skills! \n\n\n\nThis is a 6-hour program with workshop slots available on October 25 and November 14. The cost covers the class fee as well as materials. Attendees should bring a lunch and plenty of water. Aprons\, gloves\, and ear and eye protection will be provided. If you already own protective equipment you would like to use\, you are welcome to bring it to class to wear at the discretion of the instructor. Please wear natural fibers\, long pants\, and sturdy closed-toed shoes such as boots. This class will involve repetitive motions and physical activity with heavy items such as hammers\, and there will be breaks for all participants throughout. DESCRIPTION:Looking for something spooky and sweet to do with the family for Halloween season? Put on your costumes and come trick-or-treating at the Maritime Museum from 3 – 5 pm on Friday\, October 30! Explore the Museum grounds as you trick-or-treat at our exhibit buildings. Treats for costumed canines will also be available! This event is free to attend\, no reservations required. Lake and history-inspired costumes are always encouraged! \n\n\n\nThis event will take place across the Museum grounds\, including paved walkways\, gravel\, and grass. DESCRIPTION:An annual youth open-water rowing race hosted by Lake Champlain Maritime Museum right in the heart of Vergennes\, Vermont. Local high school and middle school rowing crews compete in a variety of heats\, racing from foot of the Vergennes Falls\, down Otter Creek\, and back. Always held around Halloween\, this race also includes an annual costume contest for crews\, individuals\, and coaches.  \n\n\n\nThis race is free for all to watch and cheer on the participating teams. Join us! \n\n\n\nYouth rowers register for this event through your team or as part of your fall season rowing registration. Please check with your coach if you are note sure.

SUMMARY:Fall Blacksmithing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wanted to learn how to work with fire and shape metal? In this one-day class for adult beginners\, participants will learn how to start and manage a fire\, ensure safe blacksmithing practices\, and develop basic techniques for shaping metal including forming a hook\, twisting\, and drifting. At the end of the class\, you will take home a hook or bracelet that you’ve made with your new skills! \n\n\n\nThis is a 6-hour program with workshop slots available on October 25 and November 14. The cost covers the class fee as well as materials. Attendees should bring a lunch and plenty of water. Aprons\, gloves\, and ear and eye protection will be provided. If you already own protective equipment you would like to use\, you are welcome to bring it to class to wear at the discretion of the instructor. Please wear natural fibers\, long pants\, and sturdy closed-toed shoes such as boots. This class will involve repetitive motions and physical activity with heavy items such as hammers\, and there will be breaks for all participants throughout.
