The artifact collection recovered during these excavations was donated to the Maritime Museum in 1997 and is managed by the Museum under its repository collections agreement with the United States Navy. This presentation will discuss the methodology of the 1960s excavation and its impact on our current archaeological work. It will also cover the recent reorganization process of its artifact collection conducted at the Museum in 2023.  \n\n\n\nArnold’s Bay Artifacts: Conservation and ContextCherilyn Gilligan\, Assistant Director of Archaeology\, Lake Champlain Maritime MuseumIn the world of archaeology\, context is everything. Artifacts lose significance without details of their surrounding matrix in-situ and less can be learned overall about the past by objects separated from their archaeological context. This presentation examines the artifacts of the Arnold’s Bay Project and beyond and discusses how the context of these objects helps us to interpret the overall site. In addition to site interpretations\, we will look at the conservation needs of this archaeological collection\, discuss the nature of archaeological sampling\, and learn about conservation processes for different types of materials. \n\n\n\nThe Excavation and Documentation of the Revolutionary War Row Galley CongressChris Sabick\, Executive Director\, Lake Champlain Maritime MuseumIn the fall of 2022 archaeologists from the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum began the exploration of the abandonment site of the flag ship of the colonial naval fleet on Lake Champlain in 1776\, the Row Galley Congress. Test excavations in 2022 revealed that substantially more of the wreck was present at the site than previously suspected. Excavation and documentation of the hull remains continued through the summer of 2023 and this presentation will present the initial findings of the project and discuss the design and construction of this poorly understood vessel class.  \n\n\n\nSite Formation Processes: Defining the Theoretical Process of Archaeology for the Revolutionary Warship CongressPaul Gates\, Lab and Project Manager\, Lake Champlain Maritime MuseumThe archaeological remains of the Revolutionary Warship Congress provide an interesting case study of the theoretical principles of Site Formation Processes in the exploration of how the vessel has changed over time since its construction as a warship to the current management of the vessel and the surrounding archaeological site. Site formation processes are defined as the “processes of human behavior that affect or transform artifacts after their initial period of use in a given activity.” This process preserves artifacts in the systemic context to create the historic record through reuse\, the archaeological record through the deposition of artifacts\, and any consequent cultural alterations of material in both records. DESCRIPTION:In 1993\, World Water Day was initiated by the United Nations to draw attention to the issues and threats surrounding the world’s water resources. Eleven years ago\, the Champlain Basin Education Initiative hosted the first student World Water Day Celebration to share local student work about water resources from more than a dozen classrooms. \n\n\n\nTo celebrate the anniversary of this event\, the Lake Champlain World Water Day will be held at the Champlain Centre Mall in Plattsburgh\, NY\, featuring activities and exhibits by 20 local organizations and work by local students. As part of this event\, Lake Champlain Maritime Museum will be there with our Giant Lake Champlain Map for attendees to step into the watershed\, complete quests\, and more. World Water Day Anniversary Celebration is free and open to the public. \n\n\n\nJoin us in Plattsburgh and learn about our watershed and how you can make a difference in protecting our water resources. View student art\, research\, and other work about our local watershed and water resources. Step onto the Giant Map and visit other participating organizations’ booths to engage with hands-on activities and exhibits celebrating water; learn to fish; hear clean water stories from scientists\, historians\, and watershed groups;  and more. Free ice cream coupons will go to the first 100 people to get their passport filled!  \n\n\n\nA special showing of Meet the Scientists a locally produced film by the Lake Champlain Basin Program and Peregrine Productions\, will air at Regal Cinemas at 12 PM.  \n\n\n\nA special showing of Age of Humans produced by the Wild Center will be air at Regal Cinemas at 1:30 PM. DESCRIPTION:Want to watch the solar eclipse away from busy roads and buildings? Come watch the eclipse for free at Lake Champlain Maritime Museum! We are opening our grounds for anyone looking for a unique spot to gather with family and friends and watch this amazing natural phenomenon. Bring a picnic and snacks (and a good picnic blanket as the ground might be cold or a little soft)\, friends\, and your eclipse gear. Museum exhibits and the store will not be open yet for the season\, but we will open our Welcome Center bathrooms for public use.  \n\n\n\nPlease RSVP in advance if you plan on joining us at the Museum to watch the eclipse! We will have a limited number of eclipse glasses available on a first come\, first served basis. DESCRIPTION:All seats in this class have been filled! Stay tuned for future classes. \n\n\n\nHave you ever wanted to learn how to work with fire and shape metal? In this one-day class for adult beginners\, participants will learn how to start and manage a fire\, safe blacksmithing practices\, and basic techniques for shaping metal. At the end of the class\, you will take home a fire poker you’ve made with your new skills!  \n\n\n\nThis is a 5-hour program. Attendees should bring a sack lunch. Aprons\, gloves\, and ear and eye protection will be provided\, but if you already own protective equipment\, you are welcome to bring it to the class to wear at the discretion of the instructor. Please wear natural fibers\, long pants\, and sturdy closed-toed shoes such as boots. This class will involve repetitive motions with heavy items such as hammers\, and there will be breaks for all participants throughout. DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate the launch of this year’s 25-foot rowing gig built by students!  \n\n\n\nOver the course of this school year\, a group of students from Middlebury Union High School and the Addison Consortium Program have been participating an alternative program with Lake Champlain Maritime Museum where they come to the museum weekly and learn how to build a 25’ wooden rowing gig. It’s been an incredible journey for all of them\, including a trip to the forest to learn how to select a tree that will be used to build a boat and literally building the boat from tree to finished vessel alongside our expert boat builders. The boat will join our fleet of rowing gigs that are used by high school rowing teams\, rowing clubs\, and summer trips. \n\n\n\nOn May 23\, with an audience of boat builders\, parents\, teachers\, and staff\, the students will present their finished boat\, share a little bit about their experience building\, and then we’ll parade them down to the harbor where they will launch their boat for the very first time. It’s a special moment for the Museum\, the schools\, families\, and above all the students.

SUMMARY:Spring Wave Race 2024
DESCRIPTION:The spring open-water rowing season for all middle and high school rowing teams ends with this seasonal championship race at Lake Champlain Maritime Museum! Over 100 youth rowers from around Vermont and New England will participate in races. All are welcome to join us and cheer these rowers on from the Museum’s harbor. \n\n\n\nEach season at the end of the Spring Wave\, the Museum’s Director of Maritime Programs Nick Patch also presents the Bradley Cunningham Award to a graduating senior rower\, nominated by coaches. The award is named after Brad Cunningham\, who was a participant and then junior leader in our Champlain Discovery summer kayak program for five years. He rowed and raced in our first pilot gig Spirit of Otter Creek launched in 1999. Brad was passionate about on-water programs\, knew how to lead by example\, and was a bright light of positivity for all who knew him. He tragically died in a ski accident in January 2001. We offer this award annually to the graduating senior rower that stood out as a positive role model and leader for our youth rowing community. \n\n\n\nYouth rowers must register to participate in this race through their rowing team or as part of their rowing season registration. Please check with your rowing coach if you are not sure if you are registered. The public is always welcome to attend races for free and cheer on participating crews!

DESCRIPTION:In 1994\, Nick Patch started a kayak building program at Lake Champlain Maritime Museum that would grow to be known as Champlain Discovery. A few years later\, he kicked off the boat building and rowing program\, Champlain Longboats. For thirty years\, Nick’s programs have been building beautiful wooden boats with local students that have grown into a fleet used by a vibrant community of student and adult rowers\, staff\, and friends. \n\n\n\nJoin us for a Thirty Year Bash as we celebrate Nick Patch and 30 years of youth boat building with our community! All are invited to enjoy good food\, dancing\, games\, drinks\, slideshow of photos\, memories\, and more. \n\n\n\nOther important party details: \n\n\n\n\nAttendees will need to pay a $5 Park Fee when entering Button Bay State Park\n\n\n\nThis party is free to attend but donations of any amount to help with the cost of the party are welcome! DESCRIPTION:We are so excited to partner again with Project HOePpnEr for the 6th Annual HOPE for TomorROW! This annual rowathon is an all-inclusive rowing and community event committed to raising awareness about teen suicide and an opportunity for us to come together in memory\, hope\, and support.  \n\n\n\nNO prior rowing experience is needed to join this event! All are welcome to join and row in this fun 2-mile course. The Museum provides 4-oar and 6-oar rowing gigs and life jackets\, as well as an experienced coxswain leading each boat. You can register as an individual\, register a team\, or even register as a “virtual” rower and cheer the fun on from the shore! There will also be an optional race element for anyone looking for a little friendly competition. \n\n\n\nProject HOePpnEr is a 501(c)3 charity created by Joe and Sue Hoeppner after they lost their 17 year old son Paul to suicide in 2018. The organization’s mission is to increase awareness\, conversation\, and prevention around teen suicide. Working with local schools and organizations\, they provide resources and opportunity for important discussion. HOPE for TomorROW is a way to come  together in remembrance and hope. Cyanobacteria\, sometimes referred to as blue-green algae\, is naturally found in water and under the right conditions\, can form large blooms that release toxins into the water.  \n\n\n\nAt the Maritime Museum\, we test for cyanobacteria every week to make sure our harbor is ready for boating\, swimming\, and fishing. Join us in North Harbor to learn what to look for and help keep you and your pets safe. SUMMARY:Shipwreck Tour
DESCRIPTION:Explore a shipwreck… without getting wet! There are hundreds of historic shipwrecks in Lake Champlain. Join us as we take a tour boat to the site of the Champlain II shipwreck and go for a “dive” using an underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). Our robotic camera sends back real-time video to an on-board monitor as we share the vessel’s dramatic story. Don’t miss this incredible experience- for all ages! \n\n\n\nWe will gather on the Museum green at 10:00 and proceed to Basin Harbor as a group at 10:10 to begin the tour\, which will run from 10:30 to noon. The walk to Basin Harbor is approximately a half-mile on pavement\, and visitors are welcome to drive if needed. For accessibility requests and information please contact us by email at info@lcmm.org or by phone at 802-475-2022.  \n\n\n\nTickets are $25 for kids and $40 for adults.  \n\n\n\nPlease note that due to weather conditions\, the lake level may fluctuate. In higher water conditions\, the lake is perfectly safe to enjoy by boat\, but our small ROV may not be able to dive. No matter the lake level\, you will still be able to go on a boat tour\, see shipwreck footage\, and hear exciting stories! SUMMARY:Birding and Boating
DESCRIPTION:Join us on canoes for a 2-hour program of paddling and exploring the birds of Otter Creek. This family-friendly program welcomes everyone from beginners to experts! Smaller children can take a middle seat at the bottom of the boat\, where they will go along for the ride\, no paddling required. Learn tips and tricks for paddling on the water\, different ways to encounter birds\, or just come to explore the birds of the Lake Champlain Basin. \n\n\n\nBe sure to bring clothing that can get wet as well as water to stay hydrated. Bring your own pair of binoculars if you have them- we will have a couple of pairs to share with those who do not have binoculars\, but supply is limited. We will provide canoes\, paddles\, and personal flotation devices (PFDs). We also recommend participants bring a hat and sunscreen to stay protected from the sun!
