DESCRIPTION:Looking for a fun and educational activity for your littlest sailor? Join us on Fridays at 10:30 for Lake Champlain Maritime Museum’s weekly storytime!   \n\n\n\nFamilies with young children (recommended age 5 and younger) are invited to gather with a Museum educator in our historic summer camp building\, the Roost\, as we read some of our favorite stories about Lake Champlain and summer adventures on the water out loud for all to enjoy. Stories will be read as a group and there will also be coloring pages and crafts available afterwards.   \n\n\n\nStorytime meets every Friday from May 29–October 16. This program is free to attend with no registration required.   \n\n\n\nThe Roost is situated off of a gravel path at the back of the Museum green. The ramp at the back of the building is accessible over grass. SUMMARY:Spring Wave Race 2026
DESCRIPTION:The spring open-water rowing season for all middle and high school rowing teams ends with this seasonal championship race at Lake Champlain Maritime Museum! Over 100 youth rowers from around Vermont and New England will participate in races. All are welcome to join us and cheer on these rowers from the Museum’s harbor. \n\n\n\nEach season after the Spring Wave\, Nick Patch\, the Museum’s Director of Maritime programs\, presents the Bradley Cunningham Award to a graduating senior rower nominated by coaches. The award is named in honor of Brad Cunningham\, who was a participant and then junior leader in our Champlain Discovery summer kayak program for five years. He rowed and raced in our first pilot gig Spirit of Otter Creek\, launched in 1999. Brad was passionate about on-water programs\, knew how to lead by example\, and was a bright light of positivity for all who knew him. He tragically died in a ski accident in January 2001. We offer this award annually to a graduating senior rower who stood out as a positive role model and leader for our youth rowing community. \n\n\n\nYouth rowers must register to participate in this race through their rowing team or as part of their rowing season registration. Please check with your rowing coach if you are not sure whether you are registered. The public is always welcome to attend races for free and cheer on participating crews!

DESCRIPTION:Try something new on Lake Champlain – go sailing in a custom 29’ whaleboat!   \n\n\n\nThis is a great and one-of-a-kind experience for a group of family\, friends\, or adventurous coworkers to get out on Lake Champlain in a traditionally-rigged wooden boat. Combining rowing and sailing\, these vessels were built in the Museum’s boat shop and are an unforgettable way to experience the lake.   \n\n\n\nWhaleboats are available to book in 1.5-hour increments for yourself or a pair at a flexible $60 pay-what-you-can rate per boat rental.   \n\n\n\nAdvanced registration is strongly recommended to reserve seats for everyone in your party. Each whaleboat can accommodate groups of 5 people. You may book all five slots\, or the boat may include multiple parties. A museum skipper will accompany each departing whaleboat to instruct and steer. Come prepared to sail\, wear attire that is okay to get wet. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions or if you need special accommodation.  \n\n\n\nIf no whaleboats depart on select Wednesdays\, open sailing aboard the Museum’s Split Rock Dinghies will be offered instead.   \n\n\n\nThis is not an introduction to sailing class! While simple operating instruction will be provided and a skipper will accompany you on the whaleboat\, this program is not for beginners. SUMMARY:Open Dinghy Sailing
DESCRIPTION:Get out on the water\, enjoy Lake Champlain\, and keep your sailing skills fresh! Open Dinghy Sailing offers weekly open hours and dinghy rentals for anyone with prior sailing experience to take one of the Museum’s custom Split-Rock Dinghies out for a turn on the lake. Friends\, family\, dates\, solo sailors – all are welcome to join us and sail away the afternoon or kick back after work!  \n\n\n\nOpen Dinghy Sailing hours are available on Friday afternoons starting at 4 pm. Boats are available to book in 90-minute increments and must be made by the boat and day. Open Dinghy Sailing is pay-what-you-can with a suggested rate of $40 per 90-minute booking. Please either register beforehand or arrive at the beginning of a timeslot (4 pm or 5:30 pm).   \n\n\n\nThe Museum’s Split-Rock Dinghies can fit a maximum of two adults\, or one adult and one child (under 13) each. Participants should have previous on-water experience in a sailboat or other small watercraft and be able to swim. Come prepared to sail\, wear attire that is okay to get wet. Open Dinghy Sailing is subject to inclement weather and will be cancelled in the event of strong winds\, thunderstorms\, or heavy rain.  \n\n\n\nContact us if you have any questions or if you need special accommodation at info@lcmm.org or 802-475-2022.  \n\n\n\nPlease note: We cannot offer an introduction to sailing at Open Dinghy Hours! Join us on Fridays at 10:30 for Lake Champlain Maritime Museum’s weekly storytime!   \n\n\n\nFamilies with young children (recommended age 5 and younger) are invited to gather with a Museum educator in our historic summer camp building\, the Roost\, as we read some of our favorite stories about Lake Champlain and summer adventures on the water out loud for all to enjoy. Stories will be read as a group and there will also be coloring pages and crafts available afterwards.   \n\n\n\nStorytime meets every Friday from May 29–October 16. This program is free to attend with no registration required.   \n\n\n\nThe Roost is situated off of a gravel path at the back of the Museum green. The ramp at the back of the building is accessible over grass. DESCRIPTION:Get out on the water\, enjoy Lake Champlain\, and keep your sailing skills fresh! Open Dinghy Sailing offers weekly open hours and dinghy rentals for anyone with prior sailing experience to take one of the Museum’s custom Split-Rock Dinghies out for a turn on the lake. Friends\, family\, dates\, solo sailors – all are welcome to join us and sail away the afternoon or kick back after work!  \n\n\n\nOpen Dinghy Sailing hours are available on Friday afternoons starting at 4 pm. Boats are available to book in 90-minute increments and must be made by the boat and day. Open Dinghy Sailing is pay-what-you-can with a suggested rate of $40 per 90-minute booking. Please either register beforehand or arrive at the beginning of a timeslot (4 pm or 5:30 pm).   \n\n\n\nThe Museum’s Split-Rock Dinghies can fit a maximum of two adults\, or one adult and one child (under 13) each. Participants should have previous on-water experience in a sailboat or other small watercraft and be able to swim. Come prepared to sail\, wear attire that is okay to get wet. Combining rowing and sailing\, these vessels were built in the Museum’s boat shop and are an unforgettable way to experience the lake.   \n\n\n\nWhaleboats are available to book in 1.5-hour increments for yourself or a pair at a flexible $60 pay-what-you-can rate per boat rental.   \n\n\n\nAdvanced registration is strongly recommended to reserve seats for everyone in your party. Each whaleboat can accommodate groups of 5 people. You may book all five slots\, or the boat may include multiple parties. DESCRIPTION:History lies in the depths of Lake Champlain\, waiting to share its secrets and stories. In 2026\, we’re opening up our vaults and taking a DEEP DIVE into the past with Museum experts\, archaeologists\, historians\, and educators in our free evening conversation series!  \n\n\n\nOn June 17\, Matt Harrison (he/him)\, the Museum’s Sailing Programs Manager\, will recount the events of the first day of the Battle of Lake Champlain\, known as the Battle of Valcour Bay. The fighting on the first day was carried out by many individual officers\, soldiers and sailors with differing perspectives and personalities. Matt will analyze the battle from the perspective of some of the most interesting characters involved\, including the British officers who wrote the Controversy Letters and the Patriot soldiers killed and wounded by the explosion of a cannon aboard the gunboat New York.   \n\n\n\nJoin us every other Wednesday from June through October for a free “Deep Dives” talk. SUMMARY:Introduction to Dinghy Sailing for Adults
DESCRIPTION:Do you want to learn how to sail but never had the time or opportunity? Now is your chance! Adults ages 18 and up can join us for a one-day introductory sailing class. You’ll learn about small-boat dinghy sailing in the Museum’s custom fleet of Split Rock Sailing Dinghies. Basics include how to sail a small vessel\, how to right a capsized boat\, how to get out on the water\, how to sit in the boat\, and more.  \n\n\n\nThis is a class for beginners or anyone looking for a refresher class on how to sail. If you have sailing experience and want to take one of our dinghies out on the lake to enjoy\, check out our Open Sailing dates.  \n\n\n\nThe class will be held at the Museum in North Harbor. The class will have a break in the middle of the day for lunch. Please bring a packed lunch and plenty of water to stay hydrated throughout the day. Make sure to wear clothing you don’t mind getting wet and as well as adequate sun protection. The course will include practice of a capsize drill\, so expect to be in the water briefly.  \n\n\n\nIntroduction to Dinghy Sailing for Adults is pay-what-you-can with a suggested rate of $125 for the course.  \n\n\n\n\nRegister for Introduction to Dinghy Sailing for Adults\n\n\n\n\nPlease note\, this event is subject to inclement weather and will be cancelled in the event of strong winds\, thunderstorms or heavy rain. DESCRIPTION:Take a guided tour with a Museum expert through a sampler of exhibits to learn about the historical and archaeological heritage of Lake Champlain.   \n\n\n\nDepending on the group’s interest\, we will stop in exhibits which may include Fragments: Voices of the American Revolution on Lake Champlain\, the Stone Schoolhouse\, Hazelett Small Watercraft Center\, Underwater Archaeology: Diving into the Stories of People and Canal Boats on Lake Champlain\, the replica Revolutionary War gunboat Philadelphia II\, and the Museum’s replica 18th Century Blacksmith Forge.    \n\n\n\nMuseum tours are free to attend\, no registration required

DESCRIPTION:Looking for a fun and educational activity for your littlest sailor? Join us on Fridays at 10:30 for Lake Champlain Maritime Museum’s weekly storytime!   \n\n\n\nFamilies with young children (recommended age 5 and younger) are invited to gather with a Museum educator in our historic summer camp building\, the Roost\, as we read some of our favorite stories about Lake Champlain and summer adventures on the water out loud for all to enjoy. Stories will be read as a group and there will also be coloring pages and crafts available afterwards.   \n\n\n\nStorytime meets every Friday from May 29–October 16. This program is free to attend with no registration required.   \n\n\n\nThe Roost is situated off of a gravel path at the back of the Museum green. The ramp at the back of the building is accessible over grass.
