SUMMARY:Flora and Fauna of Lake Champlain
DESCRIPTION:Come discover the plants and animals of the Lake Champlain watershed! From birds and frogs to trees and reeds\, the Champlain basin is home to thousands of unique species both above and below the water. Learn to identify native and invasive species\, where they can be found\, and how they interact. Join us for an afternoon on the water and discover what makes Lake Champlain unique. \n\n\n\nThis program uses the Museum’s fleet of canoes and is best suited for those who feel they can get in and out of a canoe\, which requires a sense of balance as well as sitting down into a low boat\, and an ability to paddle for short distances. Children under 10 can take a middle seat at the bottom of the boat\, where they will just go along for the ride with no paddling expectation. \n\n\n\nBe sure to bring clothing that can get wet as well as water to stay hydrated. We will provide canoes\, paddles and personal flotation devises (PFDs). We also recommend you bring a hat and sunscreen to stay protected from the sun. This program is weather-dependent and we will communicate cancellations the morning of the scheduled outing.   \n\n\n\n\nRegister for Flora and Fauna

SUMMARY:Spring Wave Race 2025
DESCRIPTION:The spring open-water rowing season for all middle and high school rowing teams ends with this seasonal championship race at Lake Champlain Maritime Museum! Over 100 youth rowers from around Vermont and New England will participate in races. All are welcome to join us and cheer on these rowers from the Museum’s harbor. \n\n\n\nEach season after the Spring Wave\, Nick Patch\, the Museum’s Director of Maritime programs\, presents the Bradley Cunningham Award to a graduating senior rower nominated by coaches. The award is named in honor of Brad Cunningham\, who was a participant and then junior leader in our Champlain Discovery summer kayak program for five years. He rowed and raced in our first pilot gig Spirit of Otter Creek\, launched in 1999. Brad was passionate about on-water programs\, knew how to lead by example\, and was a bright light of positivity for all who knew him. He tragically died in a ski accident in January 2001. We offer this award annually to a graduating senior rower who stood out as a positive role model and leader for our youth rowing community. \n\n\n\nYouth rowers must register to participate in this race through their rowing team or as part of their rowing season registration. Please check with your rowing coach if you are not sure whether you are registered. The public is always welcome to attend races for free and cheer on participating crews!

SUMMARY:Boat Launch Day
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate the launch of our newest boat built by students in Lake Champlain! \n\n\n\nOver the course of this school year\, a group of students from Middlebury Union High School and the Addison Central Program have been participating in our alternative education boat building program. These boat building students have been coming to the Museum’s boat shop weekly to learn\, work with their hands\, and come together to build a 25’ wooden rowing gig that will join the Museum’s fleet for education\, school rowing teams\, expeditions\, and the public. It’s been an incredible journey for all of them\, including a trip to the forest to learn how to select a tree that will be used to build a boat and literally building the boat from tree to finished vessel with guidance from expert boat builders. \n\n\n\nOn May 23\, all parents\, teachers\, staff\, friends\, and members of the public are invited to join us at the Museum for a special launch day celebration. Students will present their finished boat\, share a little bit about their experience building\, and then we’ll parade them down to the harbor where they will launch the boat for the very first time in the lake. \n\n\n\nThis event is free to attend.

SUMMARY:Open Sailing Hours
DESCRIPTION:Experience Lake Champlain by sail! Get out on the water and have some fun in custom-built sailing dinghies made in the Museum’s boat shop. Open Sailing Hours are available for anyone with prior sailing experience to enjoy. \n\n\n\nBoats are available to book in 1-hour increments for yourself or a group. Each sailing dinghy can fit two adults and one child (under 13) maximum. Participants should have previous on-water experience in a sail boat or other small watercraft and should be able to swim. Come prepared to sail\, wear attire that is okay to get wet. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions or if you need special accommodation. Dinghies will depart from the Museum docks in North Harbor. \n\n\n\nThis is not an introduction to sailing class! Simple operating instruction will be provided and a safety boat will be present. Check our other sailing events for upcoming classes for beginners: www.lcmm.org/Sailing. Due to the shortening daylight hours\, the timeslot for this program has been modified to run 3:00-5:30. \n\n\n\n\nRegister Here
