DESCRIPTION:Come explore the ecology of Lake Champlain on a guided canoe paddle with the Museum! We will get a close look at the lake’s different plants and animals from a unique vantage point\, and we’ll talk about their ecosystem and the importance of their preservation. No prior canoe experience is required\, we will cover the basics during the tour! \n\n\n\nFor canoe tours\, the Museum provides  canoes\, paddles\, and personal flotation devises (PFDs). We recommend each participant brings or wear: \n\n\n\n\nClothing that is okay to get wet \n\n\n\nA bottle of water\n\n\n\nBinoculars (we will have a couple pairs to pass around\, but not enough for everyone!) \n\n\n\nA hat and sunscreen \n\n\n\n\nThis program is offered on select Wednesdays and Fridays and is weather-dependent. DESCRIPTION:Spend time in Fragments: Voices of the American Revolution on Lake Champlain with a trained educator to explore the history of Lake Champlain’s battles\, shipwrecks\, and to learn how we uncover the stories of the past through archaeology. Step into an immersive VR experience to see through the eyes of an nautical archaeologist or find out more about the artillery used aboard revolutionary gunboats with a 3D printed model of a cannon that exploded aboard the gunboat New York. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: From the flexi-pave path\, there is one wheelchair accessible entrance to Fragments on the north side of the building. The exhibit space is fully ADA compliant.

SUMMARY:Whaleboat Wednesdays
DESCRIPTION:Try something new on Lake Champlain – go sailing in a custom 29’ whaleboat!   \n\n\n\nThis is a great and one-of-a-kind experience for a group of family\, friends\, or adventurous coworkers to get out on Lake Champlain in a traditionally-rigged wooden boat. Combining rowing and sailing\, these vessels were built in the Museum’s boat shop and are an unforgettable way to experience the lake.   \n\n\n\nWhaleboats are available to book in 1.5-hour increments for yourself or a pair at a flexible $60 pay-what-you-can rate per boat rental.  Advanced registration is strongly recommended to reserve seats for everyone in your party. Walk-ins are welcome at 4pm but reservations are required if you wish to sail after 5pm. \n\n\n\nEach whaleboat can accommodate groups of 5 people. You may book all five slots\, or the boat may include multiple parties. A museum skipper will accompany each departing whaleboat to instruct and steer. Come prepared to sail\, wear attire that is okay to get wet. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions or if you need special accommodation.  \n\n\n\nIf no whaleboats depart on select Wednesdays\, open sailing aboard the Museum’s Split Rock Dinghies will be offered instead.   \n\n\n\nPlease note: We cannot offer an introduction to sailing at Open Dinghy Hours! Participants must have prior experience in a sailing vessel or small watercraft. DESCRIPTION:History lies in the depths of Lake Champlain\, waiting to share its secrets and stories. In 2026\, we’re opening up our vaults and taking a DEEP DIVE into the past with Museum experts\, archaeologists\, historians\, and educators in our free evening conversation series!  \n\n\n\nDevyn Cabral (they/them)\, the Museum’s Collections Assistant\, will tell the story the second day of the Battle of Lake Champlain. As morning came on October 12\, 1776\, Patriot soldiers had already been rowing south for hours. Devyn will explain their frantic retreat from the perspective of sailors like John Fulton\, whose weapons were destroyed during the fight and had to escape with nothing to protect himself. They will also discuss how the attack the day prior affected the loved ones of soldiers through the eyes of Susanna Leech\, whose husband was killed during the battle.   \n\n\n\nJoin us every other Wednesday from June through October for a free “Deep Dives” talk. DESCRIPTION:Did you know there are hundreds of historic shipwrecks in Lake Champlain? Join us for a special tour and dive into this exciting underwater history\, without getting wet!   \n\n\n\nThis scenic boat tour will take you to the sites of some famous local shipwrecks as Museum experts recount their dramatic stories. Watch underwater footage of shipwrecks from the Museum’s archaeology team and underwater Remote Operated Vehicles (ROVs)\, learn about our lake’s unique geology and history\, talk with Museum experts\, and get a first-hand look at the nature and animals that call these parts of the lake home including eagles\, fish\, and more. An incredible experience for all ages!  \n\n\n\nOn the day of your tour\, gather on the Museum green at 10:00 am and proceed to the dock at Basin Harbor as a group at 10:10 to begin the tour\, which will run from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm. The walk to Basin Harbor is approximately a half-mile on pavement\, and visitors are welcome to drive if needed. SUMMARY:Philadelphia II Open Hours
DESCRIPTION:Soldiers in the Revolutionary War not only fought on boats\, they also often lived on them for months. Step aboard the Museum’s replica of the Revolutionary War gunboat Philadelphia to explore their living and working conditions\, understand the mechanics of the vessel\, and even row the oars! Aboard the vessel\, staff will have real artifacts from Revolutionary War sites around the lake (including recent artifacts recovered by our archaeologists at Arnold’s Bay) for visitors to see\, touch\, and learn about! \n\n\n\nAccessibility: The Philadelphia II is currently on the Museum Green. There is a staircase leading up to the boat\, and the boat is in the middle of a grassy area. However\, the rigging and cannon from the Philadelphia II are nearby or on the surrounding lawn\, and our staff would be happy to talk about the vessel as well as display props on the lawn. Staff can also show artifacts on the lawn if needed.

DESCRIPTION:Looking for a fun and educational activity for your littlest sailor? Join us on Fridays at 11:00 for Lake Champlain Maritime Museum’s weekly storytime!   \n\n\n\nFamilies with young children (recommended age 5 and younger) are invited to gather with a Museum educator in our historic summer camp building\, the Roost\, as we read some of our favorite stories about Lake Champlain and summer adventures on the water out loud for all to enjoy. Stories will be read as a group and there will also be coloring pages and crafts available afterwards.   \n\n\n\nStorytime meets every Friday from May 29–October 16. This program is free to attend with no registration required.   \n\n\n\nThe Roost is situated off of a gravel path at the back of the Museum green. The ramp at the back of the building is accessible over grass. DESCRIPTION:Get out on the water\, enjoy Lake Champlain\, and keep your sailing skills fresh! Open Dinghy Sailing offers weekly open hours and dinghy rentals for anyone with prior sailing experience to take one of the Museum’s custom Split-Rock Dinghies out for a turn on the lake. Friends\, family\, dates\, solo sailors – all are welcome to join us and sail away the afternoon or kick back after work!  \n\n\n\nOpen Dinghy Sailing hours are available on Friday afternoons starting at 4 pm. Boats are available to book in 90-minute increments and must be made by the boat and day. Open Dinghy Sailing is pay-what-you-can with a suggested rate of $40 per 90-minute booking. Please either register beforehand or arrive at the beginning of a timeslot (4 pm or 5:30 pm). Walk-ins are welcome at 4pm but reservations are required if you wish to sail after 5pm. \n\n\n\nThe Museum’s Split-Rock Dinghies can fit a maximum of two adults\, or one adult and one child (under 13) each. Participants should have previous on-water experience in a sailboat or other small watercraft and be able to swim. Come prepared to sail\, wear attire that is okay to get wet. We will play games following life aboard a canal boat traveling the lake\, recount the movements of Benedict Arnold’s navy as they engaged the British during the American Revolution\, take a step into our geology and ecology\, and learn from the lake.   \n\n\n\nThis program will take place outside on the flagpole green just outside of the Hoehl Family Visitor and Education Center. Program will be subject to inclement weather.

SUMMARY:Philadelphia II Open Hours
DESCRIPTION:Soldiers in the Revolutionary War not only fought on boats\, they also often lived on them for months. Step aboard the Museum’s replica of the Revolutionary War gunboat Philadelphia to explore their living and working conditions\, understand the mechanics of the vessel\, and even row the oars! Aboard the vessel\, staff will have real artifacts from Revolutionary War sites around the lake (including recent artifacts recovered by our archaeologists at Arnold’s Bay) for visitors to see\, touch\, and learn about! \n\n\n\nAccessibility: The Philadelphia II is currently on the Museum Green. There is a staircase leading up to the boat\, and the boat is in the middle of a grassy area. However\, the rigging and cannon from the Philadelphia II are nearby or on the surrounding lawn\, and our staff would be happy to talk about the vessel as well as display props on the lawn. Staff can also show artifacts on the lawn if needed.

DESCRIPTION:Try something new on Lake Champlain – go sailing in a custom 29’ whaleboat!   \n\n\n\nThis is a great and one-of-a-kind experience for a group of family\, friends\, or adventurous coworkers to get out on Lake Champlain in a traditionally-rigged wooden boat. Combining rowing and sailing\, these vessels were built in the Museum’s boat shop and are an unforgettable way to experience the lake.   \n\n\n\nWhaleboats are available to book in 1.5-hour increments for yourself or a pair at a flexible $60 pay-what-you-can rate per boat rental. Advanced registration is strongly recommended to reserve seats for everyone in your party. Walk-ins are welcome at 4pm but reservations are required if you wish to sail after 5pm. \n\n\n\nEach whaleboat can accommodate groups of 5 people. You may book all five slots\, or the boat may include multiple parties. Join us for a special tour and dive into this exciting underwater history\, without getting wet!   \n\n\n\nThis scenic boat tour will take you to the sites of some famous local shipwrecks as Museum experts recount their dramatic stories. Watch underwater footage of shipwrecks from the Museum’s archaeology team and underwater Remote Operated Vehicles (ROVs)\, learn about our lake’s unique geology and history\, talk with Museum experts\, and get a first-hand look at the nature and animals that call these parts of the lake home including eagles\, fish\, and more. An incredible experience for all ages!  \n\n\n\nOn the day of your tour\, gather on the Museum green at 10:00 am and proceed to the dock at Basin Harbor as a group at 10:10 to begin the tour\, which will run from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm. The walk to Basin Harbor is approximately a half-mile on pavement\, and visitors are welcome to drive if needed. SUMMARY:Philadelphia II Open Hours
DESCRIPTION:Soldiers in the Revolutionary War not only fought on boats\, they also often lived on them for months. Step aboard the Museum’s replica of the Revolutionary War gunboat Philadelphia to explore their living and working conditions\, understand the mechanics of the vessel\, and even row the oars! Aboard the vessel\, staff will have real artifacts from Revolutionary War sites around the lake (including recent artifacts recovered by our archaeologists at Arnold’s Bay) for visitors to see\, touch\, and learn about! \n\n\n\nAccessibility: The Philadelphia II is currently on the Museum Green. There is a staircase leading up to the boat\, and the boat is in the middle of a grassy area. However\, the rigging and cannon from the Philadelphia II are nearby or on the surrounding lawn\, and our staff would be happy to talk about the vessel as well as display props on the lawn. Staff can also show artifacts on the lawn if needed.

DESCRIPTION:Club Skill Level: Beginner to Advanced Rowers \n\n\n\nWeekly Schedule: Thursday Nights\, May–October \n\n\n\nMeetup Location: Meet at the Museum \n\n\n\nClub Details: \n\n\n\nThe Community Rowing club meets every Thursday evening\, weather permitting\, at the Museum campus. Open to adult rowers of all ages (18-99+) and of all levels (beginner to experienced) this weekly club sets out for a recreational 1.5-to-2-hour row each week. We row the museum’s fleet of rowing gigs\, either 6-seater pilot gigs or smaller 4-oared boats. This club is a great way to exercise\, socialize\, and experience the beauty of Lake Champlain in with a relaxed group. \n\n\n\nHow to Register: \n\n\n\nReady to row? You must register for this club for the season to sign up for weekly rows. We have instituted a Pay-What-You-Can model this season for all our rowing. Rowing Club registrations pay what they feel is appropriate and affordable for them\, no matter what you pay (or if you even pay at all) you will still be registered for the entire rowing season!
