SUMMARY:Lake History Cruise
DESCRIPTION:Join staff from Lake Champlain Maritime Museum\, in partnership with Whistling Man Schooner Company\, for an expert-led tour on the fascinating history of Lake Champlain out of Burlington. From hundreds of shipwrecks to historic naval battles\, prohibition smugglers to modern day nautical archaeology discoveries\, the lake has a rich and unique history. We will launch from the Burlington Waterfront to explore the lake on the Friend Ship\, a traditionally-rigged\, 31’ Friendship sloop. Key sites of interest will include the wreck sites of the General Butler\, the OJ Walker\, and the Burlington “Horse Ferry” wrecks\, and much more. Come prepared to share your interests and knowledge with the group! Visitors are also welcome to bring their own food and beverage along for the ride. \n\n\n\nSince this tour departs from the Burlington Waterfront\, we recommend that visitors allot additional time to find parking downtown. SUMMARY:Deep Dives Talk
DESCRIPTION:History lies in the depths of Lake Champlain\, waiting to share its secrets and stories. In 2026\, we’re opening up our vaults and taking a DEEP DIVE into the past with Museum experts\, archaeologists\, historians\, and educators in our free evening conversation series!  \n\n\n\nDevyn Cabral (they/them)\, the Museum’s Collections Assistant\, will tell the story the second day of the Battle of Lake Champlain. As morning came on October 12\, 1776\, Patriot soldiers had already been rowing south for hours. Devyn will explain their frantic retreat from the perspective of sailors like John Fulton\, whose weapons were destroyed during the fight and had to escape with nothing to protect himself. They will also discuss how the attack the day prior affected the loved ones of soldiers through the eyes of Susanna Leech\, whose husband was killed during the battle.   \n\n\n\nJoin us every other Wednesday from June through October for a free “Deep Dives” talk. Each evening will include an expert presentation and time for questions and conversation at the end.  \n\n\n\nDeep Dives is free to attend with registration. A complimentary drink from Shacksbury cider is included with your free registration.  \n\n\n\n\nRegister Here!

Combining rowing and sailing\, these vessels were built in the Museum’s boat shop and are an unforgettable way to experience the lake.   \n\n\n\nWhaleboats are available to book in 1.5-hour increments for yourself or a pair at a flexible $60 pay-what-you-can rate per boat rental.   \n\n\n\nAdvanced registration is strongly recommended to reserve seats for everyone in your party. Each whaleboat can accommodate groups of 5 people. You may book all five slots\, or the boat may include multiple parties. A museum skipper will accompany each departing whaleboat to instruct and steer. Come prepared to sail\, wear attire that is okay to get wet. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions or if you need special accommodation.  \n\n\n\nIf no whaleboats depart on select Wednesdays\, open sailing aboard the Museum’s Split Rock Dinghies will be offered instead.   \n\n\n\nPlease note: We cannot offer an introduction to sailing at Open Dinghy Hours! Participants must have prior experience in a sailing vessel or small watercraft. Simple operating instructions for our custom dinghies will be provided and a safety boat will be present. Check our sailing calendar for upcoming classes and programs.  \n\n\n\n\nRegister Here!

\n\n\n\nPatricia Reid (she/her)\, the Museum’s Director of Collections\, will tell the story of the third day of the Battle of Lake Champlain. Early that morning\, Patriot soldiers surrendered the row galley Washington\, and she’ll relate that moment from the perspective of Lyman Noble\, who was captured with other crewmembers. The remaining vessels from the Patriot fleet then fled into the shallow waters of Arnold’s Bay. In between the two fleets\, Patricia will tell the story of nine-year-old Sally (Kellogg) Markham and her family\, who escaped in a bateau as cannon fire raged overhead. Another child\, Squire Ferris\, was also a witness to the violence – and his life remained swept up in it until nearly the end of the Revolutionary War.
