SUMMARY:Dive Deeper Into Shipwrecks
DESCRIPTION:This October marks 250 years since British and Colonial forces clashed in the waters off Valcour Island in a pivotal naval battle that helped shape the course of the American Revolution. The remnants of that battle—including the gunboats Philadelphia and Spitfire and the row galley Congress—serve as time capsules that continue to reveal new stories about the men who fought and the hastily built fleet that delayed British advances long enough to save the rebellion. \n\n\n\nThis conversation will explore both the remarkable discoveries still emerging from centuries-old wrecks and the urgent preservation challenges facing these irreplaceable pieces of American history. \n\n\n\nFrom exploding cannons and personal artifacts to cutting-edge photogrammetry and the ongoing debate over whether to raise the Spitfire\, discover what makes Lake Champlain one of the most significant Revolutionary War archaeological sites in North America. \n\n\n\nPick up the upcoming January/February issue to read Zach’s full feature article exploring the ongoing archaeological work\, the invasive species threat\, and his own journey learning to scuba dive to visit these historic sites firsthand. \n\n\n\nThis virtual discussion will be hosted by the Adirondack Explorer water reporter Zachary Matson and will feature Lake Champlain Maritime Museum Executive Director Chris Sabick. \n\n\n\n\nRegister Here!

SUMMARY:Boat Shop Open House
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate the building of our newest boat built by students! \n\n\n\nOver the course of this school year\, a group of students from Middlebury Union High School and the Long Trail Program have been participating in our alternative education boat building program. These boat building students have been coming to the Museum’s boat shop weekly to learn\, work with their hands\, and come together to build a 25’ wooden rowing gig that will join the Museum’s fleet for education\, school rowing teams\, expeditions\, and the public. It’s been an incredible journey for all of them\, including a trip to the forest to learn how to select a tree that will be used to build a boat and literally building the boat from tree to finished vessel with guidance from expert boat builders. \n\n\n\nJoin us in the boat shop on Wednesday\, March 19 for a special Open House as our student boatbuilders demonstrate their boat building skills and knowledge gained.   \n\n\n\nThis event is free to attend\, no RSVP needed. Family\, friends\, faculty\, and supporters are welcome!

SUMMARY:Boat Launch Day 2026
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate the launch of our newest boat built by students in Lake Champlain! \n\n\n\nOn May 22\, all parents\, teachers\, staff\, friends\, and members of the public are invited to join us at the Museum for a special launch day celebration. Students will present their finished boat\, share a little bit about their experience building\, and then we’ll parade them down to the harbor where they will launch the boat for the very first time in the lake. \n\n\n\nThis event is free to join\, no registration required. Light refreshments will be provided.

SUMMARY:Spring Wave Race 2026
DESCRIPTION:The spring open-water rowing season for all middle and high school rowing teams ends with this seasonal championship race at Lake Champlain Maritime Museum! Over 100 youth rowers from around Vermont and New England will participate in races. All are welcome to join us and cheer on these rowers from the Museum’s harbor. \n\n\n\nEach season after the Spring Wave\, Nick Patch\, the Museum’s Director of Maritime programs\, presents the Bradley Cunningham Award to a graduating senior rower nominated by coaches. The award is named in honor of Brad Cunningham\, who was a participant and then junior leader in our Champlain Discovery summer kayak program for five years. He rowed and raced in our first pilot gig Spirit of Otter Creek\, launched in 1999. Brad was passionate about on-water programs\, knew how to lead by example\, and was a bright light of positivity for all who knew him. He tragically died in a ski accident in January 2001. We offer this award annually to a graduating senior rower who stood out as a positive role model and leader for our youth rowing community. \n\n\n\nYouth rowers must register to participate in this race through their rowing team or as part of their rowing season registration. Please check with your rowing coach if you are not sure whether you are registered. The public is always welcome to attend races for free and cheer on participating crews!

SUMMARY:Whaleboat Wednesdays
DESCRIPTION:Try something new on Lake Champlain – go sailing in a custom 29’ whaleboat!   \n\n\n\nThis is a great and one-of-a-kind experience for a group of family\, friends\, or adventurous coworkers to get out on Lake Champlain in a traditionally-rigged wooden boat. Combining rowing and sailing\, these vessels were built in the Museum’s boat shop and are an unforgettable way to experience the lake.   \n\n\n\nWhaleboats are available to book in 1.5-hour increments for yourself or a pair at a flexible $60 pay-what-you-can rate per boat rental.   \n\n\n\nAdvanced registration is strongly recommended to reserve seats for everyone in your party. Each whaleboat can accommodate groups of 5 people. You may book all five slots\, or the boat may include multiple parties. A museum skipper will accompany each departing whaleboat to instruct and steer. Come prepared to sail\, wear attire that is okay to get wet. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions or if you need special accommodation.  \n\n\n\nIf no whaleboats depart on select Wednesdays\, open sailing aboard the Museum’s Split Rock Dinghies will be offered instead.   \n\n\n\nThis is not an introduction to sailing class! While simple operating instruction will be provided and a skipper will accompany you on the whaleboat\, this program is not for beginners. You must have prior sailing experience. Check our other sailing events for upcoming classes for beginners: www.lcmm.org/Sailing.  \n\n\n\n\nRegister Here!

SUMMARY:Storytime
DESCRIPTION:Looking for a fun and educational activity for your littlest sailor? Join us on Fridays at 10:30 for Lake Champlain Maritime Museum’s weekly storytime!   \n\n\n\nFamilies with young children (recommended age 5 and younger) are invited to gather with a Museum educator in our historic summer camp building\, the Roost\, as we read some of our favorite stories about Lake Champlain and summer adventures on the water out loud for all to enjoy. Stories will be read as a group and there will also be coloring pages and crafts available afterwards.   \n\n\n\nStorytime meets every Friday from May 29–October 16. This program is free to attend with no registration required.   \n\n\n\nThe Roost is situated off of a gravel path at the back of the Museum green. The ramp at the back of the building is accessible over grass. There is a high threshold at the entrance of the ramp. For accessibility requests please contact us by email at info@lcmm.org or by phone at 802-475-2022.
