SUMMARY:Shipwreck Tour
DESCRIPTION:Explore a shipwreck… without getting wet! There are hundreds of historic shipwrecks in Lake Champlain. Join us as we take a tour boat to the site of the Champlain II shipwreck and go for a “dive” using an underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). Our robotic camera sends back real-time video to an on-board monitor as we share the vessel’s dramatic story. Don’t miss this incredible experience- for all ages! \n\n\n\nWe will gather on the Museum green at 10:00 and proceed to Basin Harbor as a group at 10:10 to begin the tour\, which will run from 10:30 to noon. The walk to Basin Harbor is approximately a half-mile on pavement\, and visitors are welcome to drive if needed. For accessibility requests and information please contact us by email at info@lcmm.org or by phone at 802-475-2022. \n\n\n\nTickets are $25 for kids and $40 for adults. \n\n\n\nPlease note that due to weather conditions\, the lake level may fluctuate. In higher water conditions\, the lake is perfectly safe to enjoy by boat\, but our small ROV may not be able to dive. No matter the lake level\, you will still be able to go on a boat tour\, see shipwreck footage\, and hear exciting stories! In the event of cancellation due to severe weather\, we will notify you in advance and tickets will be refunded or transferred to an open date. \n\n\n\n\nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Talking Archaeology: The Pine Street Barge Canal Breakwater Ship Graveyard
DESCRIPTION:Join the Museum’s Co-Director of Archaeology\, Paul Gates\, for a free and engaging lecture on the Pine Street Barge Canal Breakwater Ship Graveyard. \n\n\n\nThe Pine Street Barge Canal Breakwater Ship Graveyard is located on the waterfront of Burlington\, Vermont and contains a number of abandoned vessels that give us a glimpse into the history of Lake Champlain. Representing a period dating from the early half of the 19th century into the middle of the 20th century\, these shipwrecks are records of the changing social\, economic\, and technological trends of the Burlington waterfront. Paul will explain how he investigated the creation and history of this ship graveyard through the lens of behavioral archaeology and site formation processes. \n\n\n\nThe lecture will be held in the auditorium of the Hoehl Family Education and Visitor Center. The lecture will last approximately 30-45 minutes with a Q&A session afterwards. \n\n\n\nThis lecture is free to attend\, no registration required.

DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate the launch of our newest boat built by students in Lake Champlain! \n\n\n\nOver the course of this school year\, a group of students from Middlebury Union High School and the Addison Central Program have been participating in our alternative education boat building program. These boat building students have been coming to the Museum’s boat shop weekly to learn\, work with their hands\, and come together to build a 25’ wooden rowing gig that will join the Museum’s fleet for education\, school rowing teams\, expeditions\, and the public. It’s been an incredible journey for all of them\, including a trip to the forest to learn how to select a tree that will be used to build a boat and literally building the boat from tree to finished vessel with guidance from expert boat builders. \n\n\n\nOn May 23\, all parents\, teachers\, staff\, friends\, and members of the public are invited to join us at the Museum for a special launch day celebration. Students will present their finished boat\, share a little bit about their experience building\, and then we’ll parade them down to the harbor where they will launch the boat for the very first time in the lake. \n\n\n\nThis event is free to attend.
