SUMMARY:Open Dinghy Sailing
DESCRIPTION:Get out on the water\, enjoy Lake Champlain\, and keep your sailing skills fresh! Open Dinghy Sailing offers weekly open hours and dinghy rentals for anyone with prior sailing experience to take one of the Museum’s custom Split-Rock Dinghies out for a turn on the lake. Friends\, family\, dates\, solo sailors – all are welcome to join us and sail away the afternoon or kick back after work! \n\n\n\nOpen Dinghy Sailing hours are available on Wednesday and Friday afternoons starting at 4pm. Boats are available to book in 90-minute increments and must be made by the boat and day. Open Dinghy Sailing is pay-what-you-can with a suggested rate of $40 per 90-minute booking. \n\n\n\nThe Museum’s Split-Rock Dinghies can fit a maximum of two adults\, or one adult and one child (under 13) each. Participants should have previous on-water experience in a sailboat or other small watercraft and be able to swim. Come prepared to sail\, wear attire that is okay to get wet. Open Dinghy Sailing is subject to inclement weather and will be cancelled in the event of strong winds\, thunderstorms\, or heavy rain. \n\n\n\nContact us if you have any questions or if you need special accommodation at info@lcmm.org or 802-475-2022. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nRegister for Open Dinghy Sailing\n\n\n\n\nPlease note: We cannot offer an introduction to sailing at Open Dinghy Hours! DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free family-friendly day of public art-making with Juniper Creative Arts and be a part of a new mural that will be going up at the Museum in 2026!  \n\n\n\nThis free drop-in event is open to all ages and artistic abilities\, rain or shine! We’ll roll-up our sleeves\, reflect on the past\, and get hands-on as we contribute to a public art project for the Museum’s new exhibit exploring the American Revolution on Lake Champlain. The final mural will be unveiled with the new exhibit in May 2026. \n\n\n\nJuniper Creative Arts is a family collective whose mural initiatives focus on creative placemaking to foster community-building\, sense of belonging\, and the celebration of African diasporic culture within themes of Afro-Futurism\, mythical fantasy\, surrealism\, and nature. To date\, they have created close to 40 community murals located in schools and on public buildings across the state of Vermont. \n\n\n\nThis event will take place in the center of the Museum campus under the Philadelphia II shed. Chairs and art supplies will be provided. No prior registration required. DESCRIPTION:We’re excited to welcome homeschool families to Lake Champlain Maritime Museum for our Fall Homeschool Day! This day will focus on the ecology of Lake Champlain and will include activities such as a scavenger hunt by the waterfront\, fishing as a group with a large net then identifying what we caught\, looking at plankton and benthic macroinvertebrates under a microscope\, and a lesson on threats to Lake Champlain.  \n\n\n\nAll members of the family are welcome\, but activities are geared toward ages 6 and up. We will provide coloring pages for younger siblings if they need a break from structured activities. Please note that all children must be accompanied by an adult. \n\n\n\nLimited space available! SUMMARY:Otter Creek Challenge Race
DESCRIPTION:An annual youth open-water rowing race hosted by Lake Champlain Maritime Museum right in the heart of Vergennes\, Vermont. Local high school and middle school rowing crews compete in a variety of heats\, racing from foot of the Vergennes Falls\, down Otter Creek\, and back. A festive race\, this event also includes an annual costume contest for crews\, individuals\, and coaches. Youth rowers register for this event through your team or as part of your fall season rowing registration. Please check with your coach if you are note sure. \n\n\n\nThe public is welcome to come watch the race for free and cheer along participating teams from the park or along Otter Creek!

Put on your costumes and come trick-or-treating at the Maritime Museum from 3 – 5 pm on Thursday\, October 30! Explore the Museum grounds as you trick-or-treat at our exhibit buildings. Treats for costumed canines will also be available! This event is free to attend\, no reservations required. Open to all curious metalsmiths ages 10–15\, in this workshop students will learn the main ways of creating metal objects and complete projects themselves. SUMMARY:Blacksmithing for Beginners
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wanted to learn how to work with fire and shape metal? In this one-day class for adult beginners\, participants will learn how to start and manage a fire\, ensure safe blacksmithing practices\, and develop basic techniques for shaping metal including forming a hook\, twisting\, and drifting. At the end of the class\, you will take home a hook or bracelet that you’ve made with your new skills! \n\n\n\nThis is a 6-hour program. The cost covers the class fee as well materials. Attendees should bring a lunch and plenty of water. Aprons\, gloves\, and ear and eye protection will be provided. If you already own protective equipment you would like to use\, you are welcome to bring it to class to wear at the discretion of the instructor. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an introduction of the newly published book by Lake Champlain Maritime Museum\, titled The Champlain Canal: 200 Years of Change.  The book features content by historians\, archeologists\, and biologists on the past and present evolutions of the Champlain Canal\, which celebrated its bicentennial in 2023. Matt’s talk will focus on early tourism on the waters of the canal and on Lake Champlain\, in particular the accounts of two women travelers who recorded their vacations along the canal in the 1890s — Florence Snedeker and Augusta Brown. \n\n\n\nThis talk will take place at the Plattsburgh Public Library and will be given by Matt Harrison\, Sailing Programs Manager at Lake Champlain Maritime Museum.

DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate the building of our newest boat built by students! \n\n\n\nOver the course of this school year\, a group of students from Middlebury Union High School and the Long Trail Program have been participating in our alternative education boat building program. These boat building students have been coming to the Museum’s boat shop weekly to learn\, work with their hands\, and come together to build a 25’ wooden rowing gig that will join the Museum’s fleet for education\, school rowing teams\, expeditions\, and the public.It’s been an incredible journey for all of them\, including a trip to the forest to learn how to select a tree that will be used to build a boat and literally building the boat from tree to finished vessel with guidance from expert boat builders. \n\n\n\nJoin us in the boat shop on Wednesday\, March 19 for a special Open House as our student boatbuilders demonstrate their boat building skills and knowledge gained.   \n\n\n\nThis event is free to attend\, no RSVP needed. DESCRIPTION:Looking for a fun and educational activity for your littlest sailor? Join us on Fridays at 11:00 for Lake Champlain Maritime Museum’s weekly storytime!   \n\n\n\nFamilies with young children (recommended age 5 and younger) are invited to gather with a Museum educator in our historic summer camp building\, the Roost\, as we read some of our favorite stories about Lake Champlain and summer adventures on the water out loud for all to enjoy. Stories will be read as a group and there will also be coloring pages and crafts available afterwards.   \n\n\n\nStorytime meets every Friday from May 29–October 16. This program is free to attend with no registration required.   \n\n\n\nThe Roost is situated off of a gravel path at the back of the Museum green. The ramp at the back of the building is accessible over grass. SUMMARY:Spring Wave Race 2026
DESCRIPTION:The spring open-water rowing season for all middle and high school rowing teams ends with this seasonal championship race at Lake Champlain Maritime Museum! Over 100 youth rowers from around Vermont and New England will participate in races. All are welcome to join us and cheer on these rowers from the Museum’s harbor. \n\n\n\nEach season after the Spring Wave\, Nick Patch\, the Museum’s Director of Maritime programs\, presents the Bradley Cunningham Award to a graduating senior rower nominated by coaches. The award is named in honor of Brad Cunningham\, who was a participant and then junior leader in our Champlain Discovery summer kayak program for five years. He rowed and raced in our first pilot gig Spirit of Otter Creek\, launched in 1999. Brad was passionate about on-water programs\, knew how to lead by example\, and was a bright light of positivity for all who knew him. He tragically died in a ski accident in January 2001. We offer this award annually to a graduating senior rower who stood out as a positive role model and leader for our youth rowing community. \n\n\n\nYouth rowers must register to participate in this race through their rowing team or as part of their rowing season registration. Please check with your rowing coach if you are not sure whether you are registered. The public is always welcome to attend races for free and cheer on participating crews!
