SUMMARY:Deep Dives: Battle of Valcour Bay - Day 2
DESCRIPTION:History lies in the depths of Lake Champlain\, waiting to share its secrets and stories. In 2026\, we’re opening up our vaults and taking a DEEP DIVE into the past with Museum experts\, archaeologists\, historians\, and educators in our free evening conversation series!  \n\n\n\nDevyn Cabral (they/them)\, the Museum’s Collections Assistant\, will tell the story the second day of the Battle of Lake Champlain. As morning came on October 12\, 1776\, Patriot soldiers had already been rowing south for hours. Devyn will explain their frantic retreat from the perspective of sailors like John Fulton\, whose weapons were destroyed during the fight and had to escape with nothing to protect himself. They will also discuss how the attack the day prior affected the loved ones of soldiers through the eyes of Susanna Leech\, whose husband was killed during the battle.   \n\n\n\nJoin us every other Wednesday from June through October for a free “Deep Dives” talk. Each evening will include an expert presentation and time for questions and conversation at the end.  \n\n\n\nDeep Dives is free to attend with registration. A complimentary drink from Shacksbury cider is included with your free registration.  \n\n\n\n\nRegister Here!

SUMMARY:Deep Dives: Battle of Valcour Bay - Day 3
DESCRIPTION:History lies in the depths of Lake Champlain\, waiting to share its secrets and stories. In 2026\, we’re opening up our vaults and taking a DEEP DIVE into the past with Museum experts\, archaeologists\, historians\, and educators in our free evening conversation series!  \n\n\n\nPatricia Reid (she/her)\, the Museum’s Director of Collections\, will tell the story of the third day of the Battle of Lake Champlain. Early that morning\, Patriot soldiers surrendered the row galley Washington\, and she’ll relate that moment from the perspective of Lyman Noble\, who was captured with other crewmembers. The remaining vessels from the Patriot fleet then fled into the shallow waters of Arnold’s Bay. In between the two fleets\, Patricia will tell the story of nine-year-old Sally (Kellogg) Markham and her family\, who escaped in a bateau as cannon fire raged overhead. Another child\, Squire Ferris\, was also a witness to the violence – and his life remained swept up in it until nearly the end of the Revolutionary War.  \n\n\n\nJoin us every other Wednesday from June through October for a free “Deep Dives” talk. SUMMARY:Deep Dives: The Row Galleys of the American Revolution
\n\n\n\nJoin us every other Wednesday from June through October for a free “Deep Dives” talk. Each evening will include an expert presentation and time for questions and conversation at the end.  \n\n\n\nJoining us on August 26 will be Executive Director Chris Sabick\, who will be speaking on the row galleys of the American Revolution. \n\n\n\nWhile an enormous amount of research and documentation has been carried of Revolutionary War Gunboats like Philadelphia and Spitfire\, we know surprisingly little about the Row Galleys that also served in the American fleet at the Battle of Valcour Island. These larger vessels added significantly to the capabilities of the American fighting force with Congress serving as Benedict Arnold’s flag ship. Recent research conducted at Arnold’s Bay and in historic resources has added significantly to our understanding of this vessel type. This presentation will discuss the design\, and construction of the row gallies as well as looking at how they were armed\, crewed\, and employed during the naval actions on Lake Champlain in 1776. \n\n\n\nDeep Dives is free to attend with registration. A complimentary drink from Shacksbury cider is included with your free registration.  \n\n\n\n\nRegister Here!

SUMMARY:Deep Dives Talk

Each evening will include an expert presentation and time for questions and conversation at the end.  \n\n\n\nJoining us on Wednesday\, September 9\, is Staff Archaeologist Taylor Picard\, who will be speaking on the process of nominating shipwrecks to the National Register of Historic Places. \n\n\n\nAn important resource for the field of historic preservation is the National Register of Historic Places\, or the NRHP. First established by the National Park Service in accordance to the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966\, the NRHP serves as the formal list of historic properties that have significance to local\, state\, and national history. Over the years\, the Museum has evaluated and nominated dozens of shipwrecks to the NRHP as a part of our mission to preserve Lake Champlain’s maritime history. Over the last two years\, the Museum has worked on nominating the Providence Island Canal Sloop. This presentation explains the importance of the NRHP through the recently completed nomination process for the Providence Island Canal Sloop. \n\n\n\nDeep Dives is free to attend with registration. A complimentary drink from Shacksbury cider is included with your free registration.  \n\n\n\n\nRegister Here!

The presentation will review the historical background of the Great Bridge and its importance to the defense of Lake Champlain during the American Revolution. Additionally\, information from the archaeological research and survey between 1992 and 1993 will be discussed as a reflection of McLaughlin’s work. The presentation will conclude with the Museum’s recent involvement with submerged cultural resource mitigation of a section of the archaeological remains in New York State waters. SUMMARY:Deep Dives: Valcour Bay Research Project
\n\n\n\nJoin us every other Wednesday from June through October for a free “Deep Dives” talk. Each evening will include an expert presentation and time for questions and conversation at the end.  \n\n\n\nOn October 7\, Paul Willard Gates\, Director of Archaeology\, will share insight on the Valcour Bay Research Project collection. \n\n\n\nBetween 1999 through 2004\, several field seasons were conducted by the Archaeology Department at the site of the Battle of Valcour Bay. Known as the Valcour Bay Research Project (VBRP)\, the work consisted of a Phase I underwater archaeological investigation of the submerged battlefield at Valcour Bay\, in Lake Champlain. Throughout the 1999 to 2002 field seasons\, the VBRP team professionally located\, mapped\, documented\, and conserved recovered artifacts related to the Battle of Valcour Bay on October 11th\, 1776. \n\n\n\nThis presentation will re-examine these artifacts in the context of naval warfare and the horrific experiences of people from both the American fleet and the British fleet. Examinations of these artifacts are interpreted through a lens that reveals a raw\, visceral look of 18th century weapons and not a glorification of war. By interpreting these archaeological resources\, we can piece together the lived experiences of people who were at the Battle of Valcour Bay. In doing so\, we hope our audience can gain a better understanding of the importance of archaeology as a science and its use in interpreting the past. \n\n\n\nDeep Dives is free to attend with registration. A complimentary drink from Shacksbury cider is included with your free registration.  \n\n\n\n\nRegister Here!
