SUMMARY:Deep Dives: Artifact Conservation
DESCRIPTION:History lies in the depths of Lake Champlain\, waiting to share its secrets and stories. In 2026\, we’re opening up our vaults and taking a DEEP DIVE into the past with Museum experts\, archaeologists\, historians\, and educators in our free evening conversation series! Join us every other Wednesday from June through October for a free “Deep Dives” talk. Each evening will include an expert presentation and time for questions and conversation at the end.  \n\n\n\nJoining us on Wednesday\, June 3 is Staff Archaeologist Taylor Picard\, who will be speaking on the topic of artifact conservation. \n\n\n\nEarly on in designing the Fragments: Voices of the American Revolution on Lake Champlain\, the exhibit design team knew that a major feature was going to be the inclusion of artifacts from the Museum’s research work at Arnold’s Bay. The objective of the new exhibit is to tell personal stories through the lens of archaeology. To achieve this\, the archaeology and collections teams chose a series of artifacts that is linked to the lives of the soldiers that fought on Lake Champlain during the American Revolution. While many of these artifacts had previously been conserved or put on display\, the new artifacts from Arnold’s Bay needed to be prepared for the new exhibit. This presentation while explore how the Museum prepares archaeological materials for its exhibits\, and challenges that we face during conservation. \n\n\n\nDeep Dives is free to attend with registration. A complimentary drink from Shacksbury cider is included with your free registration.  \n\n\n\n\nRegister Here!

SUMMARY:Talking Archaeology: The Pine Street Barge Canal Breakwater Ship Graveyard
DESCRIPTION:Join the Museum’s Co-Director of Archaeology\, Paul Gates\, for a free and engaging lecture on the Pine Street Barge Canal Breakwater Ship Graveyard. \n\n\n\nThe Pine Street Barge Canal Breakwater Ship Graveyard is located on the waterfront of Burlington\, Vermont and contains a number of abandoned vessels that give us a glimpse into the history of Lake Champlain. Representing a period dating from the early half of the 19th century into the middle of the 20th century\, these shipwrecks are records of the changing social\, economic\, and technological trends of the Burlington waterfront. Paul will explain how he investigated the creation and history of this ship graveyard through the lens of behavioral archaeology and site formation processes. \n\n\n\nThe lecture will be held in the auditorium of the Hoehl Family Education and Visitor Center. SUMMARY:Virtual Archaeology Conference
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the third annual Virtual Archaeology Conference! Each year\, researchers and archaeologists with Lake Champlain Maritime Museum come together to share new research\, developments\, and discoveries from their work in Lake Champlain in this virtual summit that is open and free for all to attend. \n\n\n\nIn 2024\, our team will explore big questions through the lens of our ongoing archaeological work in Arnold’s Bay such as: how do archaeologists make the call on what to conserve and what not to conserve? What happened to Benedict Arnold’s 1776 flagship\, the row galley Congress\, after its abandonment? What can we learn from artifacts that were excavated by past archaeologists compared to those taken for salvage or as keepsakes by people of the past? What can the hull of the Congress tell us about the construction of the colonial naval fleet on Lake Champlain and specifically row galleys? \n\n\n\nThe full schedule and list of presenters are detailed below. \n\n\n\nThis virtual conference will be presented on Zoom webinars and is free to attend. Please register in advance to receive the direct conference link by using the “Register Now” button. For accessibility requests please contact us by email at info@lcmm.org or by phone at 802-475-2022. \n\n\n\nRegister Now\n\n\n\nVirtual Archaeology Conference 2024: Presentations & Speakers\n\n\n\nWelcome and IntroductionChris Sabick\, Executive Director\, Lake Champlain Maritime Museum \n\n\n\nLegacy Collection: Leege Collection Artifacts from Arnold’s BayPatricia Reid\, Development Assistant and Collections Manager\, Lake Champlain Maritime MuseumIn the 1960s\, a group of avocational archaeologists under William Leege conducted an excavation of the starboard side of a portion of the row galley Congress. The artifact collection recovered during these excavations was donated to the Maritime Museum in 1997 and is managed by the Museum under its repository collections agreement with the United States Navy. This presentation will discuss the methodology of the 1960s excavation and its impact on our current archaeological work. It will also cover the recent reorganization process of its artifact collection conducted at the Museum in 2023. \n\n\n\nArnold’s Bay Artifacts: Conservation and ContextCherilyn Gilligan\, Assistant Director of Archaeology\, Lake Champlain Maritime MuseumIn the world of archaeology\, context is everything. Artifacts lose significance without details of their surrounding matrix in-situ and less can be learned overall about the past by objects separated from their archaeological context. This presentation examines the artifacts of the Arnold’s Bay Project and beyond and discusses how the context of these objects helps us to interpret the overall site. In addition to site interpretations\, we will look at the conservation needs of this archaeological collection\, discuss the nature of archaeological sampling\, and learn about conservation processes for different types of materials. \n\n\n\nThe Excavation and Documentation of the Revolutionary War Row Galley CongressChris Sabick\, Executive Director\, Lake Champlain Maritime MuseumIn the fall of 2022 archaeologists from the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum began the exploration of the abandonment site of the flag ship of the colonial naval fleet on Lake Champlain in 1776\, the Row Galley Congress. Test excavations in 2022 revealed that substantially more of the wreck was present at the site than previously suspected. Excavation and documentation of the hull remains continued through the summer of 2023 and this presentation will present the initial findings of the project and discuss the design and construction of this poorly understood vessel class. \n\n\n\nSite Formation Processes: Defining the Theoretical Process of Archaeology for the Revolutionary Warship CongressPaul Gates\, Lab and Project Manager\, Lake Champlain Maritime MuseumThe archaeological remains of the Revolutionary Warship Congress provide an interesting case study of the theoretical principles of Site Formation Processes in the exploration of how the vessel has changed over time since its construction as a warship to the current management of the vessel and the surrounding archaeological site. Site formation processes are defined as the “processes of human behavior that affect or transform artifacts after their initial period of use in a given activity.” This process preserves artifacts in the systemic context to create the historic record through reuse\, the archaeological record through the deposition of artifacts\, and any consequent cultural alterations of material in both records. This presentation will inform our audience on the history and use-life of Congress and how it fits into the overall theoretical framework of Site Formation Processes. \n\n\n\nLive Q&A with Lake Champlain Maritime Museum’s Archaeology TeamPatricia Reid\, Cherilyn Gilligan\, Chris Sabick\, and Paul Gates \n\n\n\nRegister Now

SUMMARY:Canoeing for Conservation: The Nature of Invasive Species
DESCRIPTION:**This event has been cancelled** \n\n\n\nWhat are invasive species? How did they find their way into our waters and onto our shores? What can we do about them? And why does this conversation matter? \n\n\n\nIn the Lake Champlain Basin\, the number of invasive species have been growing ever since the colonizing organisms made their way to the region. From crowding out native species to decreasing nutrient resources in the waterways\, come learn about the effect of invasive species in our basin. \n\n\n\nDuring this 2-hour on-water program\, you will have a chance to take a deeper dive into the basics of invasive species: Which invasives are present in Lake Champlain today\, how they became so invasive\, and why reducing their presence is top of mind for lovers of our lake and of biodiversity. Come ready to ask questions and get to the bottom of how invasive species influence our lake! \n\n\n\nThis program uses the Museum’s fleet of canoes and participants should have at least a basic level of experience with canoeing. This program is best suited for those who feel they can get in and out of a canoe\, which requires a sense of balance as well as sitting down into a low boat\, and an ability to paddle for short distances. Children under 10 can take a middle seat at the bottom of the boat\, where they will just go along for the ride with no paddling expectation. \n\n\n\nBe sure to bring clothing that can get wet as well as water to stay hydrated. We will provide canoes\, paddles and personal flotation devises (PFDs). We also recommend you bring a hat and sunscreen to stay protected from the sun. This program is weather-dependent and we will communicate cancellations the morning of the scheduled outing. \n\n\n\nRegister Here!
