SUMMARY:Deep Dives: The Row Galleys of the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:History lies in the depths of Lake Champlain\, waiting to share its secrets and stories. In 2026\, we’re opening up our vaults and taking a DEEP DIVE into the past with Museum experts\, archaeologists\, historians\, and educators in our free evening conversation series!  \n\n\n\nJoin us every other Wednesday from June through October for a free “Deep Dives” talk. Each evening will include an expert presentation and time for questions and conversation at the end.  \n\n\n\nJoining us on September 9 will be Executive Director Chris Sabick\, who will be speaking on the row galleys of the American Revolution. \n\n\n\nWhile an enormous amount of research and documentation has been carried of Revolutionary War Gunboats like Philadelphia and Spitfire\, we know surprisingly little about the Row Galleys that also served in the American fleet at the Battle of Valcour Island. These larger vessels added significantly to the capabilities of the American fighting force with Congress serving as Benedict Arnold’s flag ship. Recent research conducted at Arnold’s Bay and in historic resources has added significantly to our understanding of this vessel type. This presentation will discuss the design\, and construction of the row gallies as well as looking at how they were armed\, crewed\, and employed during the naval actions on Lake Champlain in 1776. \n\n\n\nDeep Dives is free to attend with registration. A complimentary drink from Shacksbury cider is included with your free registration.  \n\n\n\n\nRegister Here!

Each evening will include an expert presentation and time for questions and conversation at the end.  \n\n\n\nOn September 23rd\, we will be joined by Director of Archaeology Paul Willard Gates who will discuss the Great Bridge. \n\n\n\nThe Great Bridge at Fort Ticonderoga and Mount Independence was part of a larger defensive works project constructed by American forces during the Revolutionary War in 1776 and 1777. The presentation will review the historical background of the Great Bridge and its importance to the defense of Lake Champlain during the American Revolution. Additionally\, information from the archaeological research and survey between 1992 and 1993 will be discussed as a reflection of McLaughlin’s work. The presentation will conclude with the Museum’s recent involvement with submerged cultural resource mitigation of a section of the archaeological remains in New York State waters.
