DESCRIPTION:History lies in the depths of Lake Champlain\, waiting to share its secrets and stories. In 2026\, we’re opening up our vaults and taking a DEEP DIVE into the past with Museum experts\, archaeologists\, historians\, and educators in our free evening conversation series!  \n\n\n\nJoin us every other Wednesday from June through October for a free “Deep Dives” talk. Each evening will include an expert presentation and time for questions and conversation at the end.  \n\n\n\nOn August 12\, we will be joined by Matt Harrison\, the Museum’s Sailing Director\, who will discuss Lake Champlain Maritime Museum’s new book: The Champlain Canal: 200 Years of Change. \n\n\n\nMatt will give a talk about his contribution to the Maritime Museum’s newly published anthology\, The Champlain Canal: 200 Years of Change. This new book features chapters by historians\, archeologists\, and biologists on the past and present evolutions of the Champlain Canal which celebrated its bicentennial in 2023. Matt’s talk will focus on early tourism on the waters of the canal and on Lake Champlain\, in particular the accounts of two women travelers who recorded their vacations along the canal in the 1890s — Florence Snedeker and Augusta Brown. \n\n\n\nDeep Dives is free to attend with registration. A complimentary drink from Shacksbury cider is included with your free registration.  \n\n\n\n\nRegister Here!

Each evening will include an expert presentation and time for questions and conversation at the end.  \n\n\n\nJoining us on August 26 will be Executive Director Chris Sabick\, who will be speaking on the row galleys of the American Revolution. \n\n\n\nWhile an enormous amount of research and documentation has been carried of Revolutionary War Gunboats like Philadelphia and Spitfire\, we know surprisingly little about the Row Galleys that also served in the American fleet at the Battle of Valcour Island. These larger vessels added significantly to the capabilities of the American fighting force with Congress serving as Benedict Arnold’s flag ship. Recent research conducted at Arnold’s Bay and in historic resources has added significantly to our understanding of this vessel type. This presentation will discuss the design\, and construction of the row gallies as well as looking at how they were armed\, crewed\, and employed during the naval actions on Lake Champlain in 1776. \n\n\n\nDeep Dives is free to attend with registration. A complimentary drink from Shacksbury cider is included with your free registration.  \n\n\n\n\nRegister Here!
