DESCRIPTION:History lies in the depths of Lake Champlain\, waiting to share its secrets and stories. In 2026\, we’re opening up our vaults and taking a DEEP DIVE into the past with Museum experts\, archaeologists\, historians\, and educators in our free evening conversation series!  \n\n\n\nJoin us every other Wednesday from June through October for a free “Deep Dives” talk. Each evening will include an expert presentation and time for questions and conversation at the end.  \n\n\n\nOn August 12\, we will be joined by Matt Harrison\, the Museum’s Sailing Director\, who will discuss Lake Champlain Maritime Museum’s new book: The Champlain Canal: 200 Years of Change. \n\n\n\nMatt will give a talk about his contribution to the Maritime Museum’s newly published anthology\, The Champlain Canal: 200 Years of Change. This new book features chapters by historians\, archeologists\, and biologists on the past and present evolutions of the Champlain Canal which celebrated its bicentennial in 2023. Matt’s talk will focus on early tourism on the waters of the canal and on Lake Champlain\, in particular the accounts of two women travelers who recorded their vacations along the canal in the 1890s — Florence Snedeker and Augusta Brown. \n\n\n\nDeep Dives is free to attend with registration. A complimentary drink from Shacksbury cider is included with your free registration.  \n\n\n\n\nRegister Here!

Each evening will include an expert presentation and time for questions and conversation at the end.  \n\n\n\nOn August 26\, we will be joined by Beth Sanders\, Collections Manager\, U.S. Naval Undersea Museum\, and Blair Atcheson\, Program Analyst\, Underwater Archaeology Branch\, who will speak on the collaboration which took place to recover\, restore\, and share a Howell torpedo.  \n\n\n\nIn 2013\, Navy dolphins unearthed one of the world’s rarest weapons – a 19th-century Howell torpedo. Upon discovery\, the torpedo was sent to the NHHC Underwater Archaeology Branch’s Conservation Research and Archaeology Laboratory in Washington\, D.C.\, for research and stabilization before being delivered to the U.S. Naval Undersea Museum in Keyport\, WA where it is currently on display. Follow along on the journey of the dolphins who found it\, the extensive archival research that revealed Howell Torpedo No. 24’s loss from USS Iowa (Battleship #4) in 1899\, and the two years of conservation treatment that stabilized it for tomorrow. \n\n\n\nThis program is presented in collaboration with the Burlington\, Vermont Navy Week. \n\n\n\nDeep Dives is free to attend with registration. A complimentary drink from Shacksbury cider is included with your free registration.  \n\n\n\n\nRegister Here!
