GREETINGS FROM THE CREW!

Whitehall Pot Luck Dinner

Whitehall was one of the numerous communities that welcomed the crew with hospitality and generosity. Over 60 residents cooked scrumptious pot luck dinners which the crew raved about for days. "Did you have the bread pudding?" one crew member said to the next. "Oh yes! I never liked bread pudding, but that dessert was just incredible!" This is just one of the many compliments that the crew gave the pot luck chefs who took time to make their specialty dishes. Similar acts of thoughtfulness were encountered throughout our travels across New York State. Visitors and community residents brought pies, cookies and dinner to our ravenous crew at every port. We even had a professional folk music duo that performed for us under the moonlight in Medina.

The fellowship with visitors and residents in Whitehall sparked my recollection of what this voyage meant to me this summer. The visitors, community involvement, numerous acts of kindness and sharing of canal stories at each port-of-call demonstrate the true essence of this voyage. The canal schooner Lois McClure is a traveling museum that brings to life the stories of old and makes new stories for future generations. It is the shinning beacon makes people smile remembering their youth and brings communities together to celebrate their heritage and history.
