Special Activities for the 2008 Season

Shipwrecks! On-water Excursions
NEW this season, the museum offers the exciting on-water program Shipwrecks! An excursion boat takes participants out on the lake to the site of a historic shipwreck. There, the operator deploys a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) like those used by nautical archaeologists. Participants help to guide the ROV as it explores the details of the site, instantly relaying images to an on-board monitor. If you would like to reserve the boat for your group or class, call us at (802) 475-2022; or read more online: field trip for school groups.

On-water Ecology Excursions
Row as a team with family or friends in rugged, seaworthy 32-foot wooden Pilot Gigs (made at the museum) or paddle in the museum’s canoes to explore the ecological and cultural treasures of Lake Champlain and its tributaries. Study rivers, marshes, and the waters of Lake Champlain. Watch for herons and osprey, net and identify fish, and learn to measure water clarity. Each Pilot Gig can accommodate 6-7 people. Destinations include the confluence of Otter Creek and Dead Creek, the basin below the thundering falls at Vergennes on Otter Creek, the Basin Harbor area of Lake Champlain, or the Burlington Bay area. Register in advance or create a custom family/friends trip by calling (802) 475-2022 or email info@lcmm.org.
Champlain Longboats Community Rowing
Get out on the lake for an evening row in a beautiful 24-foot or 32-foot wooden Pilot Gig. Community Rowing takes place every Thursday evening at 5:30 pm (weather permitting) at LCMM’s Basin Harbor site from June 14 through mid-September. Come join the fun, meet new people, get some exercise and explore beautiful Lake Champlain. Register in advance by calling (802) 475-2022 or email info@lcmm.org.

Schooner Lois McClure
In 2008, LCMM’s 1862-class Lake Champlain Canal Schooner Lois McClure travels to Quebec City, the Richelieu corridor, and other ports-of-call representing Vermont at the 400th anniversary of Champlain’s settlement of Quebec City. We will share the rich communal history of Vermont, New York, and Quebec, telling and gathering stories that weave us all together. From May 5 to June 15, before departure for this year’s tour, and upon return in September and October, the schooner will be at the museum waterfront and open to museum visitors.
