“Shipwreck Story Day” May 26 Opens Maritime Museum Season

Performances by members of Lyric Theater cast of Titanic: The Musical. In a dramatic start to the season, on Saturday May 26 Lake Champlain Maritime Museum presents Shipwreck Story Day featuring performances by members from the Lyric Theater cast of Titanic: The Musical. Vermont-born tenor Wayne Hobbs, whose international career has encompassed performances in New York, Boston, Canada, Germany and Switzerland, and who starred in the Lyric production in April as the ship’s designer Thomas Andrews, again takes the lead in this special reprise at the Museum. A selection of props and photographs from Titanic: The Musical will reveal how Lyric volunteers created the settings for the dramatic tale.

Earlier this spring, the Lyric Theater selected Lake Champlain Maritime Museum as community partner for their production of Titanic: The Musical, presented on the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the famous ship. “The Lake Champlain Maritime Museum, which has done such interesting work with shipwrecks in our beloved Lake Champlain, seemed like a natural fit with this particular show,” commented Lyric Theater Executive Director Syndi Zook. In a natural outgrowth of the partnership, this event at Lake Champlain Maritime Museum brings together shipwreck stories both legendary and local.

Other special activities will be offered all day: Try your luck as a Lake Captain in a role-playing game, hear Museum staff present stories of Lake Champlain shipwrecks, and follow a new self-guided walking tour around the museum to discover how museum archaeologists have recovered the lost stories of Lake Champlain shipwrecks, from Benedict Arnold's last gunboat Spitfire to the anonymous Sloop Island canal boat whose identity remains a mystery. Participation is included with daily museum admission or annual museum membership.

Lake Champlain Maritime Museum, seven scenic miles from downtown Vergennes, is open 10-5 daily from May 26 through mid-October. Explore 15 exhibit buildings, check out the activities in our listing of “daily specials,” take a boat ride, enjoy the playground and museum store. Bring a picnic or get a discount at the Red Mill Restaurant. Find more information at www.lcmm.org .
