Canal Schooner Lois McClure On Tour Fall 2006
The Lake Champlain Maritime Museum’s replica canal schooner Lois McClure tours the northern part of Lake Champlain this fall, visiting St. Albans, VT, Grand Isle, VT, and Plattsburgh, NY in September and October. During the week, she will be host to hundreds of school children from these communities, who might not be able to travel to her home port of Burlington on field trips. Using the time capsule Lois McClure, a working replica of an 1862-class canal schooner, students and other visitors step aboard a unique working watercraft from Lake Champlain’s past. Visitors will enter the forgotten lives of the canalers as they explore the vessel that was both their home and place of business. Tour the cabin (living quarters), cargo hold, forecastle and main deck of the vessel. Discover what types of cargos were carried, crew living conditions, roles of children, the hazards of canal boat life and the towing and sailing operations.
A visit to Lois McClure at any of her ports of call is free, with donations gratefully accepted. Please note that all times, dates, and ports of call are subject to change. If you would like to schedule your community group for a special tour, please contact us. If you would like to schedule students for a fall field trip, call now, as reservations are quickly filling!
